Moving to Raleigh

Hey guys, I’m considering buying a house within 30 minutes of Raleigh. I might end up moving there myself but the idea here is to buy something for my Mom when she’s ready to retire in 5 years. Yet, I’m flirting with the idea of doing this for myself too. I’m 35, single, and would know maybe two people in that area.

I sold my house in Northern Virginia during COVID, and moved to Denver. Colorado has gotten as expensive as DC. I considered buying in Raleigh back then and rent out for investment purposes but it didn’t come to fruition.

I’ll be in the process of a third career change in as many years. I know salaries are much lower in NC but I’m also seeing senior level positions that aren’t too far off from other areas of the country. Someone told me to get a high paying remote job and then move to Raleigh.

I see areas like Wendell, Zebulon, Angier, Lillington, and Sanford all blowing up. Maybe for my mom, but not for me. I’d like to be closer to the Triangle with all the colleges.

I’m not basing my decision off this thread but I’m looking for feedback for those who live there, moved there, or even moved out.

Edit: I have been down there twice. Once was for a UNC/Syracuse game and the other was for a Hurricanes/Rangers game. I explored downtown Raleigh, Durham, Duke, UNC, and Garner to visit that one friend I have there.

I don't live there but A friend of mine moved to the Charlotte area years ago and he and his wife love it. Also said he wished he did years earlier.

I don't live there, but my sister went to NC State and still lives up there with her family in Cary. She's been very happy living there and really the only consistent complaint has been traffic on I40/I440...I think they call it the Beltline there. Outside of that she's in a good area with good schools and amenities.

As for the salary, I think salaries in the southern US are going to be lower because generally cost of living is lower than places like D.C. or Denver. I live in South Carolina and we're getting tons of people retiring down here from the northeast/Great Lakes regions because the cost of living is so much better.

Hey, saw the thread and thought I'd wiegh in. I've lived in Raleigh for over 20 years now so I've seen how this place has really changed. While I'm of course biased, it's a fantasic place to live, work and raise a family. I grew up in NJ, went to school in VA, traveled for work a bit after school and settled in Raleigh. I work in pharma and this is a BIG area for that line of work. The biggest change in 20 years is the expolsion in growth and the prices that have come along with it. It used to be quite affordable (my first house was $190K). Not now as that same 1200 sqft. house goes for over $500K. But salaries here are very competivite. Not as high as major cities like Boston, San Fran, NY. but at least in my industry not far off. But because of the prices, people have been pushed out to the outlining areas. I'm closer to downtown (only 10 minutes from the Lenovo center) but I work in Sanford. Sanford is really growning and has a great little downtown and a cool vibe. But it's 40 minutes from Raleigh, Durham or CH. Happy to answer any questions.

Great area, loved it when I lived there for 5 years around 2010-2015. Cary is more upscale, west side is closer to the hurricanes hockey, nc state. I worked in Garner which was nice.
The weather, and being 2 hours from beach one way, and mountains the other, great city in the middle, couple hours to Charlotte. Great location.
Wouldn't it be funny if the world ended in 2010, with lots of fire?
