Welcome back to ATL, PJ! (Tiny request, Modern Girl tag!)

As a native Atlantan and long time PJ fan, I’m so excited they are coming back! I did some of this in the Atlanta thread a couple years ago before they announced the shows, but wondered if anyone had any other fun memories to share.
Please share any and all Atlanta PJ memories as we get ready for these shows!
So, their first show is sometime in October of ‘91 at The Point. I can find no setlist anywhere, and I only found mention of some info from the record label that it was poorly attended due to the Atlanta Braves playoffs (that was the ‘91 season, and it was definitely crazy in Atlanta!). Does anyone remember or know anything about that show?
Next, there were 2(?) Lollapalooza shows in ‘92. Looks like mostly Ten tracks with Baba and RITFW thrown in. Also, possibly a snippet of Hard to Imagine was teased as well! Directly after their first afternoon set, they traveled over to Southern Tracks (only 5 minutes from where I lived about 10 years later!). According to PJ20, they cut demos of Leash, Rats, Sonic Reducer, and an unreleased Baba O’Riley! Their first work with local boy Brendan O’Brien!
I was not at any of these shows (what was I thinking?), but how about anyone here?
Who has some early PJ memories from these shows? Let’s hear them!

So, maybe a few of us here have some more memories with these two shows. We move on from Lollapalooza and early recording session for Vs. and we find ourselves at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta! (If you are visiting this week, take a walking tour, it’s a gorgeous building.)
PJ play two sold out shows.
Night 1, April 2, 1994: a great set of songs (have not heard a bootleg though), with a pre album Not For You played. A snippet of R.E.M.’s Talk About the Passion is tagged during Daughter (love this band from Athens, if you don’t listen to them, what have you been doing?)
We also get the famous Out of My Mind improv (?) this night. I remember finding the Not For You single back in the day and hearing this as the b side. What a find! A whole new PJ song to hear, and Eddie’s lyrics and delivery on this were amazing! And born in Atlanta!
Night 2: the legendary show on April 3rd! Broadcast nationally in its entirety and no censorship! And definitely “no fuckin’ sponsors”, I can remember setting up a stack of cassette tapes, tuning in to 99X, and hitting record! What a bounty of music. Nearly all of Ten and Vs., (go listen to that version of Deep right now, it’s KILLER!, and that W.M.A., whew!), we also got 3(!) pre-Vitalogy tracks and a scorching Sonic Reducer.
And, can we talk about the 9-10 minute Porch/Androgynous Mind? Good lord. It’s epic.
All this and they worked in a session with O’Brien to track songs for Vitalogy.
Any memories of attending these shows or hearing the broadcast back in the day? Let’s sound off!
2nd - the infamous fox show (paid $80 day of to sit upstairs as a youngster) that wasn’t broadcast on 99X to the whole world. Couldn’t find anyone who wanted to go because we had been to a lot of shows prior to PJ. Gotta find my old stubs and post just that week alone. And yes $80 back in the early 90s was a lot and I probably could’ve got a better deal but young dumb me found the first group of guys with tickets and said 1 please and forked over the money
3rd and 4th will be this week - actual shows 6-9 this week and next.
We move on from 1994 to 1998! PJ plays the Lakewood Amphitheater (I will not call it by the sponsor name, there are no fuckin’ sponsors!).
This show is reknowned for the aforementioned Yeastie Girlz. I’ll let others who know better speak to this one! 😂 A rare performance of No Way(!) plus another Talk About the Passion tag! Why didn’t I come down from college for this one? (Did see them in Greenville in ‘98 though.)
The boys are back two years later at the new Phillips Arena (State Farm now). A great setlist with 6 Binaural tracks, including Breakerfall, Insignificance, Grievance, and Rival! Also, the band plays the “man trilogy” of Betterman, Nothingman, and Leatherman.
And tomorrow it continues! One more pair of shows to discuss and then it will be time to bring the energy and return Atlanta to the home of some special shows!
i missed the fox shows (I did catch the Mike Watt tour in 95). My first PJ show was the aforementioned Yield show in 98 when I was in school in Athens. And I’ve been to every ATL show from that point on. Just amazing that the 22 year wait for another non-festival PJ show is almost over.
Around the time Chris Cornell died, some guy posted on Facebook. The guy was a notary public in Atlanta at a Kinko's or some such.
Near the close of business, he got a call at work:
Not exact quotes, not exact amount of money and not exact names...but the story is true:
"Hey, I hear you're a notary public."
"I am. What's up?"
"Can you come to my location and notarize a bunch of stuff?"
"Umm, that's not how it works. You gotta come here and what's more is we're about to close in 15 minutes."
"I can't. I'll give you extra pay per document plus $2000 and whatever you want from the bar...and trust me, I've got a lot of stuff to go over."
The notary public was already a bit grumpy, but he was like.... whatever. Free beer.
So he goes to the address and it's a hotel.
"Hey, I'm Joe. I'm the notary public and I was told to come here"
"Great. I'll let the guy know you're here and just take a seat please."
So this random guy comes out.
"Are you Joe? Come with me."
They go down the hall, around the corner...and here's a custodial closet. The guy opens the door...they step in...and here's a secret elevator.
They ride the secret elevator to the penthouse...
And it's Chris Cornell, Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd with a few other VIPs, staff, security, etc..all in town for the Atlanta show circa 1994.
Stuff was notarized, drinks were had, the promised payment was made...
"Hey, so it turns out I know who you are and I'm a fan. Unfortunately, I don't have tickets for tonight. Is there anything you can do? If not, I get it."
"Well, the guest list is already overflowing, so yeah, unfortunately, there isn't anything we can do."
April 19th, 2003, PJ comes back to the Lakewood amphitheater for the Riot Act tour. A great show, they start off with Love Boat Captain, 4 other RA tracks make an appearance, including 1/2 Full (that’s a great one to hear them jam on). You Are gets scratched due to technical difficulties (I caught this at MSG that summer).
Other notables, a nearly all cover second encore? Interesting. Brendan O’Brien comes out to play on a fantastic (and at the time quite rare) Crown of Thorns. He’s local, so might we see Brendan tonight or Thursday?
Also, not 1, not 2, not even 3, but 4 George W. Bush’s show up to support Eddie on stage during Porch (they literally hold him up while he sings!). Funny stuff. Great show!
Finally, we move onto the last show! It’s September 22, 2012 and not only has Music Midtown made a comeback, it has the Foos and then PJ headlining!
And that Munk One poster is an all time great!
On a personal note, I head home from the show, wake up the next day, my wife goes into labor, and about 30 hours after show’s end, my second child, Amelia is born! What a weekend! ❤️

In 00 it was the first time I had ever heard Crazy Mary. When the die hards sang along spelling out No L-O-I-T-E-R-I-N-G allowed! I was like "what is this song?". In 03 I was singing right along as I was then a die hard.
Grievance and Insignificance were both played in 00 and 03. HailHailVitalogy would have loved it. (I did as well. Would love even one of them tonight or Thursday).
03 - Birmingham, Atlanta 22 - L̶a̶s̶ ̶V̶e̶g̶a̶s̶, Camden, Nashville
04 - Asheville, Kissimmee 23 - Ft Worth 2
08 - Tampa, Columbia 24 - Philadelphia 1&2, Baltimore
09 - Atlanta 1&2 (EV) 25 - Atlanta 1&2, Nashville 1&2, Raleigh 2, Pittsburgh 2
" if hope could grow from dirt like me. It can be done.
The '98 show at Lakewood is still in my top 3. I was lucky enough to find the poster for that show on eBay in maybe 2009 or 10? And the Music Midtown poster from 2012 is my favorite of all of them.
A tiny request! My daughter was born 30ish hours after the last Atlanta show. She needs some help convincing her that PJ are at least the second best rock band in the world.
She won’t be at the shows this week, but she can listen on the boots. She is a HUGE Sleater-Kinney fan. We went to their Atlanta show together recently and she LOVED IT!
Could y’all tag Modern Girl to something tonight or Thursday for Amelia? She loves that song so much and this would push her over the top to come with me next tour.
If not, no biggie, I just can’t believe we have a 2 night stand in Atlanta! What a blessing! 🤘
