Being a 1980s hockey fan, i absolutely did not want a Russian taking the goal scoring record home.  A putin fan nonetheless.

This year it became clear it was inevitable.  Gretzky also exposed himself as a MAGA so there is that too.

I brought my kid to a capitals game last year so he can say that he saw ovechkin.  I was blown away about how his entire game, including warmups was a slow practice of lazy energy consumption.  His entire game was just getting into scoring areas and skating as little as possible.  If Washington wasn't so good this year, i think I would be much more critical of the pursuit.

interesting observation. I guess you do what you gotta do when you’re 39. would you say he’s just cherry picking out there?

He's third in goals this year so it's clearly working

I like both of them as players. Obviously not so much their political views. I remember when Alex and  Sidney came up, everyone was so hyped on Crosby. I was more of an Ovechkin fan.

I don't think it was so much cherry picking.  Maybe just knowing limitations and playing only to his strength?
In warmups, he was on 1 knee like 80% of the time, and just a few times would grab a puck and come in and shoot.

If Washington was a bad team again, I'd probably accuse them of just padding ovi and existing to compile his goals.  That isn't the case at all though and it isnt easy to top a conference and not easy to produce as much as ovechkin has this year.

I used to attend a lot of games even I first moved to Virginia and lived in NOVA. He never back checked and always hung out at the top waiting for the breakaway. This was 15 years when he was a young player and I didn’t hate him because of Putin. But he was a cherry picker from day one.

44 percent of his goals have come from the right or left face off circle area.  He owns that area.  Damn impressive.  If cherry picking leads to so many goals maybe more guys should do it 😎🏒🥅

I think most of us prefer forwards who play 2-way.

But I don’t understand why it are saying it’s impressive that almost half come from the circles. That’s all about the PP design. I’m not arguing that he doesn’t have a great shot. I just think he’s an awful person.

  • Think of it this way - it someone started in the league today and had 20 consecutive 40 goal seasons they'd still be 95 goals short of the record.  It's pretty incredible.

Maybe, but do 60% of professional athletes publicly advocate for war criminals and murderers of his own people?  I hope that's a smaller number than 60%.

Ovechkin is a sniper.  Think Brett Hull back in the day.

Got to watch the history yesterday.  Wanted to go to the game but not for $1000!!!

Gretzky and Lemieux are still the two best goal scorers/hockey players I've ever seen play. Ovechkin isn't in that conversation yet. That Mt Rushmore is still Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr and Howe.

yep...Gretzky would have had a lot more goals if he also didn't lead the league in total assists. His total points record might be impossible to hit.

Gretzky's real unbreakable records are the assists. Absolutely mind boggling. His goals record didn't look as "unbreakable" - he wasn't that far past Gordie Howe.

Anyway, I never saw anyone better than Lemieux. He was even getting standing ovations from Flyers fans.

Gretzky fell off a cliff a bit with his back problems.  It also cost him a bit of longevity if he wanted it.

If I'm not mistaken, Gretzky has like NINE 100 assist seasons.  I think four other guys have done it once, two of them last year (Kuch and MacKinnon).  That is absurd.  No one is coming close this year.

I was going to say that and Guy Lafleur over Bobby Orr. And maybe one or two of those Penguins.

I guess.  As far as goal scorers
Gretzky, ovechkin,  bossy, lemieux, howe, both hulls, Maurice Richard, Esposito, selanne.   Austin Matthew's is trending strong.

    Jari Kurri?

Mike Bossy career was cut short, big time due to injuries. Think he had back problems? He may have been the best goal scorer of all time when you take in consideration how many games he played and the number of goals he scored.

Bossy was great too but not on the same plane as Lemieux and Gretzky.  He did accomplish something that I think is an absolute stud of a stat.

50 goals in 50 games.  I got to hold that 50th puck too, thats another story.

So You had The Rocket Richard do it, Bossy, Gretzky 3 times, Lemieux and Hull twice. Orr and Howe never got to do that.

For straight up Goal Scorers I would have to ponder that one.

For just a straight up goal scorer Mike Bossy should be considered as one of the very best? He had 573 goals in only 752 games played.  He was only able to play in 10 seasons.
