Historical facts about the University of Portsmouth, UK:
This July marks a special month for us as we celebrate our 30th anniversary as a university on Thursday 7 July 2022.
Our roots as an institution date back to 1870 to the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art, and we became Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1969, buying Ravelin Park from the Government. In the same year our first halls of residence – Rees Hall – opened in a prime position overlooking Southsea Common.
Our students have also rubbed shoulders with cultural icons over the years, acting as extras for The Who in the film Tommy in 1974 and watching an early appearance by Nirvana at the Students’ Union on their first UK tour in 1989.
And in 1992 after a decade as one of the largest and best performing polytechnics in the UK, we out-grew our old name and received university status. The University of Portsmouth was born.

Further afield, in terms of the Seattle scene's bragging rights, the SOAS show in May 1989 was highly significant. It was the first time Mudhoney had headlined over Soundgarden, as they would do again the next evening in Portsmouth. This detail might not have mattered to British audiences, for whom Mudhoney were clearly rising stars, but it certainly raised eyebrows among members of Soundgarden. - Keith Cameron (Mudhoney: The Sound and the Fury from Seattle)

The collaboration had been conceived during the previous month's UK tour, when Childish's latest band, Thee Headcoats, opened for Mudhoney in Portsmouth. - Keith Cameron (Mudhoney: The Sound and the Fury from Seattle)

March 2023: This week we teamed up with @pearljam guitarist and Arts Corps board member, Stone Gossard! @artscorps revolutionizes arts education by igniting the creative power of young people through culturally engaging learning experiences both inside and outside school.
The Arts Corps x Lil Woody's burger collab is the first in a series of community-based “Rise and Bloom” (R&B) fundraisers celebrating Arts Corps’ new Co-Executive Directors, Shawn Roberts and Naho Shioya.
Arts Corps board member and Pearl Jam guitarist, Stone Gossard shares why he loves supporting them:
"When Arts Corps was founded more than 20 years ago, it was to get great teaching artists into schools where public funding for art had been cut. Their strategy achieved a lot of local success and national recognition.
The new leadership is taking a fresh look at the current arts ed landscape to identify the obstacles and opportunities for increasing young people’s access to artmaking in this new era. We’re super grateful to Lil’ Woody’s for partnering with us to shine a light on this work and raise some money for the effort.”
$1 from every Arts Corps R&B Burger purchased this week will be donated to support Arts Corps in expanding access to arts education in our communities.
