you could be right there actually, i'd never thought about it actually, but the song definately seems to be about that kinda thing, whether specifically about mike or not i dont know.
I'm sure Ed and the band have known plenty of folks who've gone through addiction. It could be about l'andrew. Or even Kurt, though they weren't necessarily "friends". Or plenty of folks we don't know about. Or I suppose it sure could be about Mike.
Mike always seems extra animated when they play it live. It looks like he is going to cut his guitar in half:) That made me think it could be about him, but I could equally understand him playing it extra hard if it made him think of Layne. I expect the band, like always, would say that it isn't about anyone in particular, it is just about wanting to help somone you care about.

Mike wrote the music to Save You. That probably explains his excitement playing it live. It was like his only contribution to Riot Act, sadly.
I had this discussion with a Jamily member I met in Vancouver the afternoon of the '03 show.. She told me she thought Save You was about Mike, and a good point it is.. But I tend to think of the music on not such a literal level.. I think there may be some inspiration there, and Mike's turnaround is inspiring to me, for sure. But the music is for the listener, and I think the band takes their personal strengths and successes and turns it into wonderful music for us. Save You is the anthem for people who actually care, and it's a hardedged way of saying "I'm your friend".. Which the music has been for me.
Cos there is but you, and something within you.. It's taken control, let's beat it, get up, let's go!

The lyrics Ed wrote (in my opinion) are definitely about Mike.
If you look at the live performances (cut to the video) for instance 'Live at the Garden' - During singing the line "oh don't go on me now!" Ed looks over at Mike and shakes his head as if to say "Mike! we almost lost you!"
Just my opinion..
I've got a Gibson without a case, but I can't get that even tanned look on my face...
i doubt its about mike, in 2003 in a radio interview with mike and eddie, ed was asked was the song about someone he knew he said yeah, someone who has a chemical dependance, he hoped that the person would hear it and know he was their for them, the interviewer asked had the guy heard it and ed said " i dont know if he has, i hope so" doesnt really seem like the thing he would say if hte song was about mike, seemed to give too much info away if it was for mike.. my two cents...

Agreed. Mike writes badass songs! Go Mike!
But what a contribution it was. Strongest song on the disc.
I strongly disagree!
but that's ok....
