Looking for advice from the locals.  What would be your top 3 things to do in May in Raleigh? We will have an open day and looking for some can’t miss things to do while we’re in town.

Hey out-of-towners! Happy to have the guys visit Raleigh again and can't wait to see all y'all!

I put some of this info on the old dead Raleigh thread but figured I'd share here.

If you're looking for a cheap spot to stay the Ramada Inn is walking distance but will fill up fast! It's a small hotel...

BUT know that the trade off of walking to the venue is you're basically stuck out on the outskirts of the city with nothing to do before and after the show. If you want a lot of options for eating and post-show drinking and hanging you're better off staying downtown and just ubering to and from.

Bars to check out downtown: Slims, The Foundation, Landmark, Pour House

Record stores: The Pour House, Schoolkids, Record Krate, Nice Price, Hunky Dory (Cary)

    Restaurants:
--The corner of Chatham and Maynard in Cary is close to the venue and has TONS of awesome international restaurants -- several different Indian restaurants, Jamaican, Baghdad bakery, multiple Chinese joints (diff regions) etc.
--There's a decent barbecue place nearby -- ole time barbecue. Classic old school bbq joint for sweet tea and alll the soul.
--Right next to the venue there is a brand new restaurant called the local that just opened -- haven't been yet.
--A lot of people pregame events at Bru's and walk over to the venue -- there's a tunnel that goes under the street.
If you go back to pages 6 and 7 of this thread you'll see where myself and some other locals included some activities. When I have time I'll go back and combine/organize all the recommendations.

  • Thanks for the tips. Any additional cultural or outdoor activities not centered around drinking would be welcome.

For you folks who have a car, you can come visit the park I work at, haha. If you're looking to do some hiking. Blue Jay Point County Park, about 14 miles north of the arena. Our park has tons of trails (mountains to sea trail), amazing playground, ziplines, etc. You could also just go to Umstead Park, it's a lot closer to the arena and has miles and miles of trails.

If you are into it the NC Museum of Natural Sciences is pretty good.  There is also the Museum Of Art. Pullien Park is an option and there is a state park close by. You can make a trip up the road to Duke and the Gardens there or the Lemur Center (reservation required). If you are up for a day trip Wilmington and/or the beaches (Kure, Wrightsville, Carolina) there are about two hours away. May can be hit or miss temperature wise but generally favorable for the beach.

Duke Gardens is really nice, and Pullen Park is good for the kids but usually very busy. If you wanna drive 1.5 hours, the NC Zoo is the biggest in the world I think.

JC Raulston Arboretum is also a great place to get some sunshine and have a picnic.

^If you're gonna do that you better go to Mitch's Tavern across from campus on Hillsborough St. That's where the bar scene from the movie was filmed. Cool place.

Awesome. I'll do that. I promise not to throw a baseball through the back door window.

The ballpark where it was filmed is still there in downtown Durham. It's just a few miles up from the newer ballpark.

  • Go play golf an hour south

Wish they would have pushed these two shows by one day each.  Traveling and seeing a show on Mother's Day is not the gift my wife is hoping for!  :)
Help me understand, if it’s Mother’s Day, wouldn’t your mother be the one you’re concerned about? It’s not wife’s day.
