Been revisiting some of their albums lately. "One Hot Minute" is still a solid album almost 30 years down the road.

"Californication" is solid throughout but the way the vocals were recorded makes it an "in the car" album for me. Lots of harshness and sibilance on revealing equipment in a quiet environment. Takes away from the experience.

Listening to "By the Way" right now. I haven't played this album in years. It didn't really click with me when it came out but it sounds pretty fucking good now!
Agreed on all counts. OHM is so underrated, the mixing and mastering on Californication ruins an otherwise great album and BTW gets better with every listen.
You know, I don't think I appreciated "By the Way" until I got onboard and fully absorbed "Stadium Arcadium". The singles from those albums that were played on the radio didn't do much for me but a close friend urged me to buy SA and listen to it all the way through. That's when that evolution of the band finally clicked with me.

Now, I love "Stadium Arcadium" and I think of "By the Way" as the prefect bridge between it and "Californication".

Funny how sometimes you have to go backwards for something to make sense.
