I just wanted to take a moment to voice my complete love and respect for this song. I have always thought it to be one the most beautiful yet highly underrated songs in the entire PJ catalogue. After hearing the version of it from Neil Finn's 7 Worlds Collide cd it just makes you fall in love with it in a whole new way. It's a gorgeous song and really sometimes it just hits me like a ton of bricks. It's peaceful and soothing but very intense and very moving. It's yet another powerful piece of beauty brought to us by the way of Ed. Not the longest song, not a lot of lyrics, not a lot of complex things going on....but it really doesn't need all that stuff to have an affect and to get it's point across. I think it's beautiful just the way it is and makes for a perfect closer too. I just wanted to give it some appreciation as I think it's well deserved.

~~Parting Ways~~
Behind her eyes there's curtains and they've been closed to hide the flames. Remains.
She knows their futures burning but she can smile just the same. Same.
And though her mood is fine today there's a fear they'll soon be parting ways.
Standing like a statue. A chin of stone a heart of clay. Hey.
And thought he's too big a man to say there's a fear they'll soon be parting ways.
Drifting away. Drifting away. Drifting away.
Away. Away.
Drifting away. Drifting away. Drifting away.
Away. Away..........

It is perfect, I love the guitar and the ending of it. Two people walking on the shore and before they know it, they've drifted apart from one another. I read that somewhere, it was cool to see someone really see the beauty in the song.0

BUMP because this song is beautiful and someone posted about the Boston 3 version in the PORCH section and all I gotta say is HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That version is just beyond words.
Excuse me while I drift awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay......
Really though, the way the music and Ed's voice just carry that last part... it does feel like you are going somewhere, drifting. It's awesome!¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤

Right from the start, powerful, poetic beauty! This song is gorgeous! Again, Neil Finn's 7 Worlds Collide?!?! That version is extra blessed.

"chin of stone, heart of clay"
one of my all-time favorite PJ lyrics!0 -
what about the sound that plays a few minutes after the end of Parting Ways on the album?
it always jars me when i hear it after so perfectly forgetting that I had even been listening to music.0 -
Yeah I know Jaidra. I agree. The typewriter. It's so eery. Parting Ways in itself sends you drifting away....drifting away......and then you are just brought back abruptly by loud, forceful, haunting sound. I find it easy to get lost in it but in a totally different way. It's definitely trippy.
Well yeah, I just wanna add that I love this song more than ever now. The last time I went through a break-up was when Yield was out...and we all know how that album saves. Going through this kind of experience now though, it makes songs like this one totally re-born. I've become more attached to every sound, every word, every feel of this song. It really is a beauiful piece of art. It's so fuckin simple too which I love. I love how little goes such a long way here. One of Ed's best without a doubt. This song is definitely sad. It's such a beautiful sad though. Everything just fits together so harmoniously. And yeah, what a way to end an album! It's perfect!!! Send you on your way. Tells it like it is. This song sends me places and traps me all at once. Sooo incredibly moving.
Anyway...extra, extra love for this song. EVERYTHING about it is a true comfort.¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤

Sorry Black. You are not the saddest, most forlorn song in the PJ catalogue. Parting Ways is the winner. 2nd goes to Porch. Then you. Parting Ways just tugs at your heart. The sense of losing, not of loss is utterly horrifying. To know that something is being extinguished/ending is more painful than of it coming from out of nowhere. There was obviously an abrupt ending to the relationships in Porch and Black, but in this one, the couple both know the relationship is fading and there's nothing they can do about it. In this sense it shares much w/ Insignificance. It is just an incredibly beautiful, sad song. And I have to agree that the 2 Seattle '00 versions w/ April Cameron and Justine Foy were absolutely breathtaking.
On a side note: I've always thought that a Parting Ways directly into Go (a la Lukin into Not For You) would sound incredible, especially w/ how they end the song now w/ those few hard drum rolls (they could easily start Go w/ that sound, but I guess they'd have to change out guitars). Also, the theme of don't go on me found in Go would be perfect after the theme of Parting Ways. You know how sometimes you know you're not right w/ a particular person but you still don't want them to go even though you should split ("should've pulled the alarm"). Oh well just my 2 cents.Live Free or Die!0 -
3sheets, that is absolutely gorgeous! I hear ya.
This song DOES tug at your heart. Such an impact. It demands to be felt. Really, you can feel every word, every sound. Everything about it is intense and beautiful. It does always hit me like a fist to the jaw.
I just watched to TB2K version again.I love how right before the song starts Ed says---->>>
"This is how the new record ends, it's a song called Parting Ways....
(then he pauses, throws his hand up intensely and says)
...It's a lot of things...."
That it is!¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤
