I notice a lot of threads where people ask what are the best live versions of certain songs and the majority of the responses come from shows that people attended. I've been to a bunch of shows myself but cmon with some 250 official bootlegs since 2000 lets not get sentimental every time someone asks especially with all the hard work Leatherman and John Briggs have done in getting these up. I've downloaded every boot since 2000 and here are 10 random songs from 2000-2006 that I think are the best live versions in terms of performance and sound quality.

Well start with 2 from Ten

GARDEN Stockholm 6/28/00

Seriously is there a better version out there than this one especially with Mike throwing in a little Ten Years Gone riff.

BLACK Marsielle 9/9/06

I love some of the early 90's versions like Finsbury 92 and later versions such as Ottawa 05 and Perth 06 are terrific but even with a restart by the band this version as has been posted here many times before could be the best ever especially with the extended tag.

Moving on

SAD St. Paul 6/26/06

The band is totally on in this stellar version, I cannot find one that matches the intensity and sound so put it on and turn it up because this one must be played loud.

COME BACK San Diego 7/7/06

The only version that can even come close is Verona 06

CRAZY MARY Fargo 6/15/03

This was tough with about 100 different versions but no matter what I always come back to this one as do many others it seems.

IMMORTALITY Adelaide 11/21/06

Toronto 10/5/00 and Cleveland 5/20/06(Great Show & Stellar Sound) are as good performance wise and both have the great little extended intro although Toronto's sound is just a notch below the other two. If Toronto was just a little better I would put it as the best but its hard to make a top 10 list and leave off a song from the 2 performances in Adelaide 2006. I don't know what it is about those boots but the sound quality really stands out and they had some stellar performances of Present Tense and Thin Air at A2.

Time to go a little old school

HUNGER STRIKE Antwerp 8/30/06

Out of all the guest versions of this song this ones the best with Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother singing Chrissy Cornells lines.

CROWN OF THORNS Atlanta 4/19/03

A brief Chloe Dancer intro ala MSG 1 2003 and Vegas 2000 but this one mirrors the original.

Now well go somewhat obscure for the last 2

RIVAL New Orleans 8/14/00

This version of Rival which has only been played 18 times is easily the best so you're wasting your time looking for a better one.

I AM A PATRIOT Tampa 4/13/03

Last but not least, I was never really a big fan of this song until I heard Ed sing on this version.

These versions are all MP3 and each have poster art from the shows or at least I think they do. Ill be happy to put up more if anyone wants. Anyway these were all downloaded from links on this board so just do a search for the full shows. Thanks again to Leatherman and John Briggs for all their hard work.

Bonus for ya

FALLING DOWN Red Rocks 95

This is such a great song it pisses me off that this is the only live version, I would love to see them play this at least once on the next tour along with oh I don't know OTHERFUCKINGSIDE.

    Very nice choices....
I do have to disagree with you on the choice of Garden though.

Atlanta 94 version is a true classic.
If you were to go with that "other" version, then Irving Plaza will have to be the one. To this day, I still can't believe how much ass that version kicked. The audience at that gig did a superb job harmonizing. Couldn't believe my ears....

I do like the atl 94 version but I only looked at versions from official boots from 2000-06. I'll have to check out the Irving plaza version.

I didn't link any of the 08 songs but thats a great version. The 08 tour had some really good ones like Red Mosquito from Columbia, Sometimes/Tampa, Immortality/Harford, RVM/Camden and of course pretty much anything off of Bonnaroo.
  • wow...great comments and facts to back up your thoughts. It would take me a while to pick the best "versions" of their songs. I tend to favor best "shows" as a whole for the feel. I love how they really take off by the end of their sets.

Jones Beach 2 was great also
  • I downloaded and listened. Some of those boots I already owned. Your choices are superb. I disagree on 1 count... I am a Patriot.
Now, if you look at my tag you'll see I was there, but I don't speak from bias. I've heard a dozen versions of this song and I really believe that WPB 03`, one night before your choice of Tampa, is the best one
Something, call it magic, happened near the end of that song that night.
    Have a listen for yourself.

Hopefully u know where to find it cuz I don't know how to upload it yet.
    But that show is around.
Good evening San Diego, I'm Ron Burgundy
And I'm Veronica Corningstone, Tits McGee is off tonight...

Hunger Strike from Barcelona is a lot better than Antwerp 8/30/06.

    Great choices, all top versions.

Talking about Black in 2006, I would go with both Lisbon versions. The crowd sings the "we belong together" tag !!
    1996: San Sebastian
    2000: San Sebastian
2006: Barcelona, Vitoria, Lisbon I & II, Madrid, Verona, Milan
    2007: Lisbon, Madrid, London, Dusseldorf
    2009: Rotterdam, Manchester, London
    2010: Berlin, Lisbon
2014: Amsterdam I & II, Milan, Leeds, Milton Keynes.
    2018: Amsterdam I & II, Barcelona, Madrid
2022: Frankfurt, London I & II, Amsterdam II

They only played the song twice in 06 and both are great but the only reason I choose Antwerp is they flipped the vocals so Ed starts off. Stockdale also had a minor fuckup during Barcelona but it doesn't really take away anything from a great performance. I love the Black from Perth that year it had a really cool tag as did Berlin.

I have all the concerts on a ipod but its too hard to pick and choose which ones I want to make room for on the Iphone so since there so many great shows I decided to break them down by different legs of each tour and create my own setlist pulling out versions of songs that I think stand out.

Maybe its just me, but I'd much rather listen to Eddie sing the tag instead of the audience.
There are always people rating shows according to how loud the audience is; for example, " Buy Boston 2. The crowd is so loud at times they drown Ed out."
I just don't get it. I want to hear him sing.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

(I know this isn't completely related, but I've been curious about this for a while.

Check out Long Road from VA Beach 2000(1st show after roskilde) and Kitchener 9/11/05 both very powerful versions. I know a lot of people prefer WMA from Atlanta 94 but the Roo version is better.
