Masterbuilt and MIM side by side:

that is a whole lotta mccready right there!!!

looking at them i can tell differences but the mim looks pretty close. if the underlying wood was a little darker it would be even closer. i suppose that will come with time and play.
It is cool to see the differences and how more detailed and realistic wear gets added with the MasterBuilt versions.  It at least validated the cost difference to me.  They did an awesome job with the MIM version.

i would definitely try to darken up that exposed wood a little when i get mine. the wood underneath looks too new. they could have charged a few hundred more dollars and made it look a little more realistic. i know all of us would pay 2000-2500 for something like that. do they sound similar? like can you tell a difference between the two soundwise?

Does anyone know if there is a custom tool to adjust the truss rod on vintage style strats that doesn't require unbolting the neck?  This guitar has a small oval where you can just see it.

There’s not a channel between the heel and the neck pickup, so even with the pickguard off, I don’t think you could get a tool in there…

    Sweet.

Really happy with the guitar. Plays well out of the box. I haven’t had a strat in years. So it’s a cool addition to the collection.

One small thing though is that there is an imperfection on the back of the neck on the 10th fret. Thought it was a dent but it might be glue or a small repair?!

Anyone else have any neck issues?

The guys at Casino guitars in North Carolina made a video a few days ago talking about how good the mexican guitars are now.

They said something I found interesting, they said the first run of McCready's were good and this new run was even better.  I guess they mean fit and finish?

I am looking forward to these being in stock somewhere so I can play one before I buy.

I saw the Casino video ... the first run is pretty nice in my opinion.  It is an excellent guitar, especially for the price.  The rosewood slab was pretty dry, but that was easily fixed by some fretboard oil when I put new strings on.   I also polished the frets as there was some corrosion.  I bought directly from Fender, so I had to do some basic setup ... but this gave me confidence to do some more major work on a few guitars I had "retired".  If it was stamped USA and cost $1500 more, I would not know a difference other than that theoretical scenario.

In fact I was checking out some $3K Gibson Les Paul's today (60's Standard and The Greeny) and at some point I just thought, 'these are no way as nice as the McCready ... I should just go home and play it instead'.   Saved my wallet!

Plus, it's not like the Mexico plant is in some far off location that is rarely visited by the Fender big wigs or QA/QC ... Ensenada is 180 miles from the Corona, CA facility.  You could drive there for a lunch meeting between the two facilities.   The Mexico plant probably had less impact from covid as well.

    My thoughts exactly =)

The McCready is the exception of all exceptions.  Mike is one of the main reasons I picked up a guitar in the first place and his stratocaster has always been THE guitar in my world.   One ring to rule them all.

If these are as well made as the gibson standard line then they are a great deal and must be pretty damn good.  I bought a 50s standard 2 years ago and mine is pretty fantastic.  I paid 2600 for it so if the McCready is as well made for 700 less that is pretty great.

I hate the location of the truss rod.

I am saving for a strat this fall and woud like to the mccready and the american vintage ii 61 strat and see which neck and pickups I like more...I am hoping its the McCready!

Yeah, truss rod location sucks.  Blame Mike!  And Leo Fender.  youtube instructions make it fairly easy with a capo

I wanted to try a 50's standard but they didn't have one on display and it was so busy I didn't want to wait for them to haul one out to try.  I don't have large hands so I was concerned on how it would compare to a 60's. The Greeny was actually pretty nice and had a fatter neck that to my surprise felt more comfortable than the 60's.  I would like a Goldtop for sure.

I like the relic guitars.  They feel broken in, and I like the look of them.
