I think you should read up on cult leaders and their methodology of convincing adherents to follow them, act on their behalf, and yes, lay down their lives for them. Were the GOP members a bastion of morality before Trump arrived? No, they were generally ‘always vote red’ folks who’d been drinking FOX News flavoured Kool-Aid for years. Trump saw an exploitable and regularly exploited group and continued to exploit them.
