It’s true that the set is still very reliant on FI, so it has a feel of been there done that.

However it seems I have a much higher opinion of FI than most fans. I consider that album to be among the best rock albums released by a band in the later stages of their career. To me it stands up there with Lateralus, Aenima and 10k days.

I think FI is great, and would take it over 10K Days as a complete front to back album. 10K Days feels more like a collection of songs than a fluent album IMO.

My issue is more the set list formula over anything else... open w/ FI; play a few radio hits (Jambi, The Pot, Stinkfist), come back from the encore w/ CCTrip... then CV -> Invincible. The formula is a bit tired.

They're still one of the best acts out there, and IMO still worth seeing, but I don't need to see more than 1 show, and I'm definitely not inspired to travel for this. (in fairness, we don't know what songs they'll be rotating.. it might improve, but I'm not holding my breath).

I love them and I'm seeing them and will always see them but it's just rough when a band has a collection of iconic albums and you're getting very little of that.

And I know you kinda have to take what you get but this is a band who should be playing longer sets

Hard to believe it's been four years since they last played Aftershock Festival, which was just over a month after Fear Inoculum came out. I can remember the anticipation of experiencing new material live for the first time in a long time. Pneuma hit like a ton of bricks to close the show. I don't know if it has closed out many shows since then.

I am not attending Aftershock this weekend. The anticipation is just not the same.

On paper I totally get that but given they're pretty much in their sixties and that their songs are so long it probably warrants more of a breakdown.

They're doing 5 FI songs generally a night-all are over 10 minutes long and 7empest is 16. Say an average pop/rock song is 3-4 minutes that's the length of 15 of those songs there. The Pot is 7 (2 songs) Pushit is 10 (2.5 songs), Rosetta is 12 (3 songs), extended Stinkfist is 7 (2 songs) Hooker is 5 (1 song) Grudge is 9 (2.5 songs) Patient 7 (2 songs) 46+2 7(2 songs) extended Opiate 9? (2 songs). Take a mix of those with an eye to "time in play" and you're looking about the length of 25+ conventional songs, which is impressive (especially for Danny who is absolutely incredible).

I'd love them to play a 20 song set with Maynard able to belt out his screams as intensely as he did 25 years ago but age is a bitch. I'd have seen Eulogy Third Eye 4 Degrees Jerk Off and been smug as all fuck. But you have contenders for the best light show going around and the best drummer going around (not to mention a heap of other world class aspects about the show). So as much as I want more, I think they're going pretty hard.

P.S. if they played a 20 song set at the Sphere I'd give my left nut to be there.

Good catch NB, very different setlist. Don’t think I ever saw that one Undertow track. But did get swamp song once in the 90s, now that would be something . And they cut FI content in half.

I just double checked setlist.fm and their sets are longer than I realized. I had in my head they were like 1:40 for some reason but it seems pretty consistently 2:15. Nevermind! I retract!

That set time usually includes a 12 minute break. They are very exact with that.

I'd be there for a 10 song set. Perfect venue for them.

Couldn’t be happier it’s MSG and not Barclays. That alone immediately makes me want to go

Never been to MSG, it's on my bucket list, and as fate would have it, the mrs. is probably going to be traveling in January, but having scored Sessanta tickets, I can't even entertain it. I'm currently looking to unload at least one of my CT tickets for next month (if not both).
