Hoarders

Got any in your neighborhood? right around my corner, I have a strange house…from what I can tell, multiple generations may live there…it’s not he biggest shithole you’ve ever seen, but they like to collect flower pots and, lately, leftover christmas trees…they have 2 army style “mess tents” in the back yard..I suspect they’re packed with shit. any of you have hoarders in your hood?

Nope, but during my community case work days I went into (sort of) a few homes where there was hoarding amongst other things.

Not in my hood but I have a client who told me that she bought a house down the street from hers because her house was packed with shit.

She recently moved to assisted living and cleared out of one house and sold it for significantly less than market. It had to have been a fucking pit.

Fascinating how people get into that habit.

YES.  Friend of the family is.  His house has slowly filled up over the years.  His pathway in the house has gotten smaller.  I tell him that when he goes, he’s 83, that his kids will have to clean up all this shit.

He has multiple sheds plum full of shit.  He likes tools that don’t work…

when I was a fireman, I’d say 80% of our house fires involved a hoarding situation. makes dragging hose a bit difficult.

If I lived in a smaller space I'd be buried in my dumb stuff. Would have to thin it out. But would I?

I had an aunt that was a hoarder. When she died my mom had to go to her place to clean it out and she said it was real bad. There were newspapers and other junk there from years and years ago. She wished she took pics of it. I can only imagine. Heebie Jeebies.

When I lived in Banff I was forced to move into the basement suite of an old hoarder for a time (due to lack of housing availability). It was totally insane, and sad AF, as she was an senile old lady. It was a severe case - up in her living space there were literal tunnels between the junk. One day she nearly burned the house down and killed us while we were sleeping because she'd knocked a lamp over into a pile of oily rags. We woke up already half over come by smoke inhalation, but thank god we managed to put out the fire before the whole house burned down. She had no idea she'd even done it. Really close call.

We have a hoarder moving out from our shared housing this month. He found an affordable enough apartment to move into but he can't bring it all. I think some of it may end up in storage. Other than his hoarding he is generally a nice enough guy. Typically as he has lived around here with myself & others he'd work 2 jobs & use his extra income to treat himself to nice things on a regular basis. There aren't many serious life consuming romance opportunities showing up for him in his life so as a way of feeling better he shops, & orders things. His life of shopping will likely need to change because his new place doesn't offer him the same square footage of room to spread his purchased items out into it. Also his new place is more pricey than whatever he has had to pay here to stay but at least he gets more of a solo living situation than what he has had here.

it’ll end up if storage if he’s truly a hoarder. my SIL is a hoarder and literally has three storage units full of mostly worthless crap. she’s like “your guy”…she buys stuff she doesn’t need but, like a true hoarder, she also hangs on to stuff she “might need someday”…like empty cardboard boxes, etc.

My Dad was a hoarder of ridiculous things. I helped them move a few times years ago and was always pissed off at how much junk we had to move.

He was a veterinarian and had some odd things preserved in jars....kind of like that scene in Silence of the Lambs where they find that head in a jar. Two headed kitten, dog heart with a massive amount of heartworms, etc. Not sure if he still has those or not.

His garage was full, half of my sisters garage and two separate storage units that were one car garage sized. Just junk.

The only good thing to come of his early onset dementia is that he finally agreed to let my mom trash the two storage units and cleaned out their garage. He does still have some things in my sister's garage but probably just things that actually did have some sentimental value.
