Recommendations for NYC trip

in All Encompassing Trip
Looking for things to do & see in NYC (I’ll be there Feb 16-21st).  Anything music related like record stores, anything PJ related, places to catch live local music.  I’m aware of the big main NYC attractions but I’m looking for some of the lower profile things that may just be cool to walk by (for ex, I’m going to walk by the building that is on the cover of Physical Graffiti, just because).  Other than that, any recommendations are appreciated.  Thanks

    I would check out Mercury Lounge, small venue, cool as hell to see a show.

    Brooklyn Made also if you are in that area.  Another cool spot to see a show.

    Feb 17th Remember Jones is playing at the Brooklyn Bowl.  You want to see an eclectic and fun performer?  Go check him out.

    The Physical Graffiti building is a few blocks from where I live. There are some cool record stores in the neighborhood as well. Send me a PM and I will think of some suggestions for you.

    Get a steak at Peter Luger.
    If not there, get one at one of the Wolfgangs.  Be sure to order the bacon as an app.  Not Lugers but a longtime Lugers employee opened the spots.  They supposedly get second pick of the best cuts.  (After Lugers, of course.)  

    Not sure if Grand Central Station is a tourist destination but I love sitting, having a beer at the spot overlooking the main terminal and watching people scurry around/at the beautiful architecture.

    Good suggestion and McSorley’s is a really close walk to the Physical Graffiti building so you can see that first than grab a beer. Also right next to the Physical Graffiti building is where the Stones filmed their Waiting on a Friend video.

    Here are my record store suggestions:

    Ergot Records - East 2nd Street. Small but a good selection. I bought the OG pressings of the first four PJ albums and Mirror Ball there - all sealed. The owner buys big collections so some treasures can be found there. 

    Academy Records - East 12th Street - mostly used. Small section of new. Lots of classic rock and jazz - reasonably priced. 

    Generation Records - Thompson Street - huge selection of used and new records. Besides the  usual classic rock they also have a lot of punk rock, alternative, and metal. The downstairs has a large selection of 45s in all genres. 

    Village Music World - Bleecker Street - a bit overpriced but worth a visit. Really old school. They carry everything there and have a large selection of boxed sets. Besides the bins the floor is piled high with cardboard boxes and stack of records. They also have a whole section just for Record Store Day releases. And the owner loves to tell stories. 

    There are also some cool record stores in Brooklyn and Queens that I have yet to visit so I can’t comment on them.

    When I went to London years ago, people were all over us trying to pick our stuff off. Never had a problem in nyc, but always be careful.

    there's a new bad brains mural across from the old cbgbs location. Cool area to walk around. Look for the 99 cent slices too.

    Keen's Steakhouse for the classic NYC steakhouse experience. You'll need a reservation though.

    Sushi Yasuda near grand central on 43rd if your into Sushi

    Do the Omakase… not cheap, but a great experience

    Thanks for the recommendations.  I hit up Generation Records and Village Music World.  They both had a lot to look at.  After spending a little too much time at generation I couldn’t spend as much time at village that it would really take to truly explore that place.  It’s a long, narrow space with just piles and piles and boxes everywhere.  In some of the boxes were brand new stock, others were just a ton of stuff they just didn’t have room to organize.  This is a great place for people that just want to spend a few hours digging.  I didn’t have enough time to dedicate that day but maybe next time.

    If you want authentic New York pizza, get yourself a slice at Sbarro's. The one at 33rd and 7th is considered one of the best NY pizzas in the world.

    I am glad you had fun. During Covid I used to walk over to Generation Records every Sunday with my mask on. Not a lot of things were back open yet and there was not a lot to do since people were not hanging out with friends too much. So every Sunday I would spend a few hours in there and got to know one of the guys who worked there - so I was able to actually socialize with another person as well. We talked music for hours. As he got to know my tastes he would text me if something he thought I would like came in. He has since left the store but I love places like that. Village Music is a whole other beast. You could spend days in there going through the mess of things that haven’t even made it to the bins yet.
