And basically, everyone who voted for POOTWH sold their souls for this, guns and what we have today. Thanks Bernie.MayDay10 said:IMO, each presidential term should come with a Supreme Court nomination with some sort of safeguard that congress cannot simply block every attempt and they need to agree on something. Its appalling that a 1-term president who lost the popular vote was able to select 40% of the court and shape our laws long-term.09/15/1998 & 09/16/1998, Mansfield, MA; 08/29/00 08/30/00, Mansfield, MA; 07/02/03, 07/03/03, Mansfield, MA; 09/28/04, 09/29/04, Boston, MA; 09/22/05, Halifax, NS; 05/24/06, 05/25/06, Boston, MA; 07/22/06, 07/23/06, Gorge, WA; 06/27/2008, Hartford; 06/28/08, 06/30/08, Mansfield; 08/18/2009, O2, London, UK; 10/30/09, 10/31/09, Philadelphia, PA; 05/15/10, Hartford, CT; 05/17/10, Boston, MA; 05/20/10, 05/21/10, NY, NY; 06/22/10, Dublin, IRE; 06/23/10, Northern Ireland; 09/03/11, 09/04/11, Alpine Valley, WI; 09/11/11, 09/12/11, Toronto, Ont; 09/14/11, Ottawa, Ont; 09/15/11, Hamilton, Ont; 07/02/2012, Prague, Czech Republic; 07/04/2012 & 07/05/2012, Berlin, Germany; 07/07/2012, Stockholm, Sweden; 09/30/2012, Missoula, MT; 07/16/2013, London, Ont; 07/19/2013, Chicago, IL; 10/15/2013 & 10/16/2013, Worcester, MA; 10/21/2013 & 10/22/2013, Philadelphia, PA; 10/25/2013, Hartford, CT; 11/29/2013, Portland, OR; 11/30/2013, Spokane, WA; 12/04/2013, Vancouver, BC; 12/06/2013, Seattle, WA; 10/03/2014, St. Louis. In his separate opinion, Thomas acknowledged that Friday’s decision does not directly affect any rights besides abortion. But he argued that the constitution’s Due Process Clause does not secure a right to an abortion or any other substantive rights, and he urged the court to apply that reasoning to other landmark cases.
Thomas wrote, “in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”
Griswold - the right to contraception
Lawrence - makes gay sex legal
Obergefell - right to gay marriage

This is not even a little surprising. (Well maybe a little surprising it would end up in a concurring opinion). It's a no-brainer that things like this are next. The logical conclusion is that everything involving human rights will be up to the states; "protecting the unborn" is polarizing but easy enough. Then they'll go after the gays. Eventually segregation will be up to the states. And that states people are moving to in droves are going to take giant shits on every one of them that doesn't live and look like the Cleavers.mrussel1 said:https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/3535841-thomas-calls-for-overturning-precedents-on-contraceptives-lgbtq-rights/In his separate opinion, Thomas acknowledged that Friday’s decision does not directly affect any rights besides abortion. I truly believe this will be a case of the dog finally catching the car. Republicans may long for the days that this was all a way to whip up their base, but with little chance of doing anything.OnWis97 said:

I have said as much for years. Republicans for 25+ years have used the chase to ban abortions as the biggest net to weaponize these 1-issue-voters. I didnt think they actually wanted to ban abortion. The chase was all they needed to grab power.mrussel1 said:

but again, it'll be up to the "undecideds".
still undecided? REALLY?

I always thought right or left judges was odd. To be a right or left judge seems like a oxymoron to me.PJ_Soul said:The SCOTUS has become everything it was meant to combat. It is completely broken. The entire thing should be torn down, the justices dismissed, and the entire process of establishing it needs to be rewritten from scratch so that the SCOTUS is non-partisan, and the justices can actually make decisions they way they are sworn to. If that isn't done, the SCOTUS is just a contributor to America's scary decline.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -
we fucking told you this would happen once scalia died and then obama was denied a pick. i am not sure why everyone is acting so surprised.
biden must act. he must expand the court. if he does not, he is ceding the country to the right wing extremists. otherwise why should anybody vote for him?"You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

He's going to wait until the mid terms to see if it can be done through the senate if enough dems are elected.gimmesometruth27 said:we fucking told you this would happen once scalia died and then obama was denied a pick. i am not sure why everyone is acting so surprised.

biden is trying to make sure one side likes him. to be a good president you have to piss off both sides. he has to do something unilaterally. he has to. at this point he has nothing to lose."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

People like to say that Trump's terrible mocking of the disabled reporter is when it should have been over. Maybe so, but this was it for me. The GOP made a very transparent power-grab and were rewarded handsomely. Trump's name is going to be the first name mentioned in writings of how the United States became a dictatorship, but this was a huge milestone down this path. I hope Mitch's name lives in that kind of infamy too.gimmesometruth27 said:we fucking told you this would happen once scalia died and then obama was denied a pick. i am not sure why everyone is acting so surprised.
