Two vinyl LP "completist" questions.

Also spelled "completest", here are two questions for you vinyl LP fanatics:
1.  As a vinyl fan, how would you define "completest" (i.e. just one of each authoritative LPs, or all those plus all color variations, or every variation of every kind, etc.)?
2.  According to your definition of "completist", for which musicians or bands would you say you have reached the stage of completist?

    1.  Same here- one of each official release.
    2.  Very close to having all the vinyl LPs and singles by J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr.  The one LP I don't have is J's Martin + Me.  That record was very expensive for the longest time and even though I have the CD, felt like I "had" to have it to have complete J/Dino LP's.  And then, oddly enough, that last record was reissued at a more reasonable price but I realized a) I don't really care for that one all that much and b) it's still more cash than I care to lay our for something just to have it.

I came close at one time to having all the Neil Young records and although I have a lot of them, again I see no reason to have everything.  I've grown more toward wanting to acquire things I will actually listen to and have sold off several things that just sit on the shelf.  But still, buying has lowly outnumbered selling.  As my 4x4 Kallax shelving approaches full, I'm being more careful than ever about buying more records.  One Kallax unit for me this lifetime, and no more!

I would also agre of having 1 of each release.    I have the complete collections of Tom Petty, Pearl Jam, Springsteen, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, and probably a few more.

There's also that problem when you think you have every album/ep a band put out, only to find out there's one you didn't know about... so you thought you were complete... then wham!
  • It's always great when they do a box set and you have them all!  PJ, Cake, etc.
  • Oh yeah, Petty and the Heartbrakers.

I also have every Weeks and Oh Sees album too.

    1. To me once you define what you are collecting: 12 inch official releases, live releases, studio releases, singles, or box sets it’s one open copy and one sealed copy of everything

sealed to me is more of the “collection”, open is to listen to.
it’s less fun to have a collection of anything you can’t also enjoy

Depending on the band I collect different specific categories.  Sometimes it’s everything sometimes it’s just box sets or live releases.

    2. Pearl jam basically complete, DMB complete, several bands in progress

I have a PJ sealed, PJ open, PJ OG set for my completist list.

Me too. Plus I add in open reissue and sealed reissue for some reason

so it 4 copies of Riot Act for example

Christmas  singles don’t interest me so not having those doesn’t affect my collection being complete

I can’t be “complete” until I get two Bennys. Other than that I’m done so I’ll probably stay incomplete

I want just the box 😂

but it looks like it’s only the 7 inch box. People will go nuts for those singles. I just had to draw the line somewhere

    1. I think you only need one of each official release to qualify. I’m not interested in having multiple copies of the same album, or a separate sealed collection..

    2. Pearl Jam, Mark Lanegan, Iron & Wine, Sebadoh, Afghan Whigs, Foy Vance.
I’m still 3 or 4 short of completing my Neil Young vinyl collection, but the ones I’m missing are crazy expensive.

    I've got the 12" too.  I have everything.  It's a sickness, lol.

Every offici-cal release from the label, world-wide.
I don't have complete collections of any band. Just stuff I really like and just enough of a collection to actually listen to and not sit around collecting dust.

    1. One of each release
    2. My Morning Jacket, Elliott Smith, Ben Harper (all releases), Soundgarden, Spoon, Brandi Carlile, Radiohead, QOTSA

I'd say PJ, but I don't own Benny or LD

That’s way down the rabbit hole.  Every pressing in every market. That’s like what 50 copies of Ten.  Double that if you want one open one sealed.

That’s what makes it fun. Your definition of a collection is whatever you want it to be

Benny is not essential to be complete.  That is like saying the Vaults are included and they are not.
