    I will confess here what could rightly be called "bias" and "closed minded", maybe even to the extreme: 
    I only have a vague notion of what Kanye ("Ye") sounds like and thus have no idea why he is often referred to as a genius.  This goes all the way back to 9-11 when West and Mike Meyers spoke side-by-side regarding the incident.  The man was not at all well spoken and basically called George Bush a racist (a comment that had nothing to do with 9-11) and later reversed his statement.  From that point on, pretty much all I've read about him indicates an extreme ego and further confusion about where he stands on things.  His arrogant posturing is so off putting to me, I don't see anyway I would enjoy or appreciate his music.
    But I curious as to why some consider him "ahead of his time".

    From Kanye’s work as a producer before “Through the Wire” through to his present work, he continues to not only evolve but innovate. 

    Also, I don’t know if you’ve ever known a bipolar person whose meds might need a little tweaking (or who just isn’t taking them), but Kanye’s “extreme ego” and “arrogant posturing” are classic examples of what that generally looks like. He just so happens to have his moments in public, which also makes sense to me based on my history with adjacency to bipolar folks.  

    That’s not an excuse for his behavior, of course; it’s a reason.

    How about Hybrid by Theory Linkin Park?  That album spawned a whole slew of new bands.  They kind of ran w the genre and made Emo theirs.

    EDIT: Music was getting stale for me as far as rock goes and these guys were a breath of fresh air.

    Forgot about Save Ferris.  Saw them a bunch of times when in college, my buddy's band played a lot of the same crappy gigs as them.  If memory servers a member of my buddy's band was in a ska band called One Legged Bob which either shared members with Save Ferris or someone was banging someone else from the band...something like that.
    Anyway, I didn't love them.  I didn't love most of the sounds we sat through to support our friend's band.  Did a loooooot of drinking at dumphole places.  :lol:

    Were you in Socal during that time? 93-97 ska had a big following.  Swing dancing made a comeback in the Bay area too.  Quite a fun time to be alive.
