Love Love love the Harrybu McCage album, you??

ratmandoratmando Moss Beach, CA Posts: 344
I know everyone got it in their Mystery Boxes, and I am so annoyed seeing so many on eBay, because it just SCREAMS "I didn't bother listening to this, you want it?". Matt Cameron is GENIUS on this album- everyone is. Thelonious Monk and George Clinton collected in one album done just perfectly gives a great indication of the range of this guy's music and more so his music knowledge. Our home is immersed in jazz, (visit jonesjazz.com and you can see/hear my husband's work- 11 albums worth, or if you've seen Penn & Teller, he's the music director/musician in the show.) I've always had motown/rock as my world, and was introduced to jazz when Ravi Coltrane, (Son of John, and a phenom in his own right), was in school with me at Calarts- total immersion. Then later, in my second round of grad school, studied jazz vocals at San Francisco State... again, worked rock at night, jazz by day/weekends, and blown away by so much I've seen and heard. The album that was a lovely surprise in the mb-- blew me away!

Does anyone else feel that way? Is this on your playlists now, as well? Would you go see Harrybu McCage? (yes x3 for me.)

Yes! We've been playing it a lot around the house since the mystery box arrived. People selling it are crazy for not giving it a chance, not to mention, who do they think is going to buy it from them? All the people that are really into PJ just received a copy in their mystery box!

So with you there, Bob..(great name by the way). I hope that anyone who bothered to listen to it, or the Rockfords disc, (and Three Mountains), is learning more about their favorite musicians than those who just nod, dismiss it and push it away. There is so much richness in these musicians soul and heart of what they play outside of PJ. And you KNOW I'm a PJ junkie... every note, every word... every chord, (and why isn't Boom called officially a member, I mean, come on?!). Eddie's Uke albums and tours have been sell outs-- it makes my mind go kablooey when people give up before trying something different- new. (found a great ice cream that way)

I actually bought this when it came out a few years ago and I liked it! But it's not something I put on and listen to a whole lot. When it comes up on shuffle I'm like, wow, this is pretty cool! Matt is a great drummer, all styles. Pretty sad people would rather make $3 or whatever on ebay than open it up and listen to it. I didn't get one in my box, that seemed to be a 2nd round of stuff, the later boxes got more CDs it seems. If I did get one though, I'd give it to a friend to hear.

All of the side projects I have heard I really like. Probably because the musicians in those bands are just that good. I really like Walking Papers, Tres Mts, & RNDM.

I have not had a chance to listen to and I did not receive Harrybu McCage or the Rockfords in my MB. I would really like to give these a listen if anybody has multiples of these or is just looking to give their's away.

I know a 2nd RNDM album is being talked about now. There were talks of a new Walking Papers album not too long ago also. I am really hoping 1 or both of them will be touring near me in the near future!

I am in the middle of my first listen through this album and all I can say is WOW! Absolutely love this. I have been branching into jazz lately and this is exactly what I've been waiting for. Anybody have any recommendations to continue my education? I have some Miles, Thelonius, etc. I have enjoyed the stuff from the show Mad Men...

First of all, I started a "thank you" post to AndySlash & ratmando for offering me this cd and possibly either of the Rockfords cds back on July 8th. I typed it on my phone and sent it then. However, it did not send for some reason & I didn't notice that until earlier today. I apologize to you both for that.

Now, I would like to thank AndySlash. I received the Harrybu McCage cd in the mail yesterday. I listened to it once right away and then part way through again. It is a very good album & I like it very much.

Thank you again very much for the Harrybu McCage & possibly 1 or both of the Rockfords cds (I never realized they had a live one out).

I really appreciate the generosity from both of you.

    Thanks again !!!

That's a very good album also. If I would have got that one in my MB I would have sent it to you.

Hopefully someone has one for you.

Listened to it today. It wasn't for me. So if someone's interested, I'd trade mine for a sticker, sticky pass, or the Jeff CD single.

Jason, I've just PM'd you about the Rockford's 4 track EP. Your's if you'd like. I am missing RNDM- have nothing from that stash, and I'm still missing Star Ana with McCready. (I have Satchel, Brad, and two of Jeff's albums- including Tres Mts- if anyone wants my second Tres mts, let me know)

and YES.. the Keith Jarrett stuff is great.. also newer stuff from the late Charlie Haden or if you want to see a bass player who will blow you away, go to youtube and check out Niels-Henning Lonsgstred Pederson, who sadly died FAR too soon a couple of summers back. Joe Pass, and Julie London too. And if you want a surprise, Rachel Gould's voice sounds so great its as if every standard was written for her, just as Ella Fitzgerald's voice was.

I got a mystery box CD from the gentlemen known as @scurtis.
I really did enjoy it, but I've been a jazz fan for years. Ultimately, it's not the best jazz lp I've ever heard, nor is it going to change jazz, but it's a good listen and I will give it multiple plays.
@ratmando has put up a good list. There's also a bunch of great jazz post 1957. If you like what you hear on Harrybu, you might be in to jazz-fusion (Rhodes pianos and electric guitars). Maybe try the first 2 albums from Mahavishnu Orchestra or Miles Davis Bitches Brew.

    John Coltrane - Blue Train
    Miles Davis - Walkin/Cookin/Steamin/Relaxin
    Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Bill Evans - Sunday At The Village Vanguard (get the box set)

And then if you want to get into fusion, that's a whole new can of worms...
