    You have too many people that thought they were better than McCandless and they weren't.

    I do applaud people for giving it a go though but know your limitations people!

    Hopefully it stops the reckless from seeking it out.

    Have you not seen warning signs in national parks warning visitors of the inherent danger of the wilderness? How or why is where the bus was located different?

    It's "Where" the bus is located.  It's not something you can drive to. You have to make a real effort to get there and when the weather changes, as does in that type of environment, you're city slicker ass is in for some harsh times.

    This isn't a "day hike" type of trip.

    There's an irony here for me.  Jon Krakauer is one of my favorite outdoor adventure writers- right up there with Ed Viestures and David Roberts- but his work has also led to too many novices making a mess of things, sometimes even at the cost of their own lives.  Just look at what a trash heap Mt. Everest has become, and now the wilderness area McCandless died in.  Pretty sad, really.

    Very kind of you to mention me, H2M!  I do have two near mints copies in my inventory.  Unfortunately, this is a title I haven't listed on Biblio because there are quite a few out there and the warehouse book dealers who deal in large volume have knocked the price down so low I can't compete with them, so I have held them at home hoping for an order through the store.  That said, if anyone is interested and wants a nice copy that will be sent in a padded box rather than the thin plastic bags that most warehouse dealers use for shipping, let me know.  (List price is $22.95.  Each copy  I have is $10 plus $3.95 shipping.)

    In general I agree with Halifax's comments - the wild areas are dangerous and the responsibility is on those who enter them to be prepared. But in this case I agree with removing the bus. The book and subsequent film were too effective in romanticizing the story, to the extent that it became more of a pilgrimage than backcountry hike for its own sake. Put the bus in a park close to town as a sort of a museum, and the idiots can visit it safely. Hikers who are prepared can still find the actual location if they put the work in.

    Where you make the mistake in adding those in is people are planning on doing those and they are prepared.  The people that are getting stuck out there to see that bus should be hanging out at the local park.

    Every treacherous hike I went on we were prepared and we did them on a regular basis.  I view it like the people that want to try and work in Alaska because they watched Deadliest Catch.  No you don't and most people can't and shouldn't attempt it.

     Because every person who has driven to a parking lot at the rim of the Grand Canyon, hopped out in their flip flops with a bottle of water and tried to hike to the bottom and back was prepared? They lose, on average, 12 a year at the Grand Canyon and the bus lost 12 over around 15 years. But yea, let’s remove the bus to protect stupid people from themselves? I suppose if these folks bought a gun legally, you’d call them “responsible?”

    its easy to just say they lose 12 a year and leave it implied its from irresponsible behavior..

    Wouldn’t being “responsible” include knowing what the risks are and taking the necessary precautions? Much like if you decide to hike to where the bus used to be?

    All of the locals are rejoicing from what i’ve read.  Thats not a fun day or days for the search and rescue teams every time they have to search for someone who either called for help or never came back.  Put the rusted thing in a museum where people can visit it.  Or drop it like 1 mile out from the highway if people want a little hike.

    Excellent point, cp.  My step daughter works with search and rescue in a different part of Alaska and it's often a tough gig.  I've heard enough stories to confirm that.  Thanks for mentioning those folks.
