I had high school French a million years ago. Went to QC last tour and would walk in and say Bonjour....few words in French...they'd hand me the French menu and I'd say Oh...sorry, I need English...but I think everyone appreciates a few words effort if you try some Frenchmcgruff10 said:

yes. I haven't been. only montreal. but I have HEARD (AKA: unsubstantiated) that if you don't speak french, the locals can be VERY snobby about it. not sure about touristy areas. in the same way when you try to speak canadian french to someone from France.mcgruff10 said:
So should I brush up on some French since I know nothing of the language or will enough people speak English?BennyLaRue said:
Quebec City is probably the most French, most European-feeling city in North America. You can find people there that know no English fairly easily - that kind of thing is much rarer in Montreal.mcgruff10 said:Damn I didn’t even see the link because I was mesmerized by the fry, gravy, cheese thing you posted.
Just saw the link, definitely some good spots there. In your opinion is quebec city more french or canadian? and yes I know they speak french lol. Montreal and sherbrooke didn't feel that french to me.
You can find good pizza and beer there but personally, I'd go for the local flavours - poutine, tortiere, tarte au sucre.

I'm sure many people from all walks of life have different experiences. awesome to hear you didn't experience what I've been told. I'm sure it's different depending on the area visited and many other factors.1ThoughtKnown said:

Although the poutine is fantastic and I can confirm the existence of various delicious craft beers in Québec City, I wouldn't be shy to try other delicious foods there...Chez Boulay, Clocher Pencher, ect... all kinds of good stuff there.
Edit: Amazing pizza: "Nina Pizza"

SInce I flew in and had the time one thing I recommend if you like is a walking tour of QC....It's a fascinating old city, it's not that big. I found a walking tour on Trip Advisor and booked it, learned a lot. I took train to next show and the VIA rail station is walking distance from Old Citymcgruff10 said:

Swiss Chalet? You had something at Swiss Chalet and now are proclaiming not to like it.Gern Blansten said:
We stopped at a Swiss Chalet in Canada and the gravy they served with the fries was pretty average. I love the idea of cheese on fries but I don't care for gravy.PJNB said:mcgruff10 said:Any good pizza or local craft beer to be found in Quebec City? I ll have no car and staying in old town.
Try out this slop. I heard its pretty good.
Not sure what style you like for pizza but check this list out. Something in there for everyone. https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurants-g155033-c31-Quebec_City_Quebec.html

i went to quebec city last tour. i live in canada and speak very very little french. it is no problem there as it is a very big tourist town, so most will speak english to you without being offended . in montreal it is different.0

I'll put this in SAT terms so Americans can understand:
Swiss Chalet : Canadian food :: Applebee's : American food0 -

Any of you guys tried Pictou County pizza? Sam's Greek Pizza sauce is amazing!!0 -
I had the opposite experience in montreal. not one person had an issue with speaking english to us. interesting.foodboy said:i went to quebec city last tour. i live in canada and speak very very little french. it is no problem there as it is a very big tourist town, so most will speak english to you without being offended . in montreal it is different.Your boos mean nothing to me, for I have seen what makes you cheer0 -

We can’t talk about bourbon but it’s okay to talk about beer.....0

Forget all this Swiss Chalet business. When in Quebec you do St. Hubert.
You don't need to know French in Quebec City, but you may get worse service. If you "try" they will appreciate that, know you speak horrible French, and then speak English with you.2011: Vancouver

Wait do people still drink Ballast Point?gotthebottle said:
you like the one that's most popular...need to try the smaller breweries! ike this one for example....mcgruff10 said:
Love me some ballast point sculpin.gotthebottle said:Wait till everyone starts asking...."what's the best craft beer in San Diego?" #CraftBeerCapital
Small, local breweries are always the way to go.
Like this one...
Four years ago Ballast Point, which was at the time a "local" San Diego brewery with a huge reputation based on the immense popularity of its' flagship beer Sculpin IPA, was sold to the huge liquor conglomerate Constellation Brands for $1 Billion....yes, $1 Billion dollars (actually $952 Million--but $1 Billion sounds better. As we beer consumers know, Sculpin was revered....for a while. But the fickle taste buds of beer drinkers (cue Hazy beers as the booze du jour) moved on....while Sculpin still exists, as does Ballast Point Brewing, they have floated down to a regular old sold at supermarkets (at least on the West Coast) beer.
In December a small Highwood, Illinois brewery called Kings & Convicts bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands for....get ready for it and remember Constellation bought it for (nearly) $1 Billion.....ready? ready? Somewhere between $50 and $60 million--a $900 million dollar loss to Constellation. As I understand it from an "insider", no one at Constellation lost their job over this cluster "f". You know who I wish I was? The original owner(s) of Ballast Point...that's who.0 -
