Normally no. Its usually the GM that does the tanking by decimating the roster (see 2019 Miami Dolphins) so the coach and players can't win no matter how hard they try.

I think some people do. I guess I just don't know what "stink it up naturally" means then.

They're tanking and rightfully so. They owe the Nets a first rounder that is top 20 protected so there is a huge incentive right there to just play and develop their young guys right off the bat.

Durant is gone. Curry is out. Thompson is out. Green is already kind of hurt. They're 1-3. If they are already in a big hole a month from now, why risk getting Green more hurt? Sit him. At the trade deadline, they'd be stupid to make moves to improve this year and get into the playoffs as the 8 seed.

They're tanking. There's nothing natural about it. They will never say they are tanking. But tanking is absolutely the right thing for them to do this year.

I will say however the Colts in the "Suck for Luck" year I think were tanking from at least a coaching standpoint if not the players as well. No NFL coach worth his salt starts Curtis Painter at QB for the majority of the season if they are trying to win games.

But what other option did he have? The third stringer was better?

When you compete at a high level like the Warriors do and have Curry and Dreymond on the court, you really think they want to lose?

That is fucking nuts.

Tanking naturally means just what I said.  They will stink naturally and not have to try to be any worse.

I'll use the Knicks as an example.  Their fans WANTED them to keep losing but they pulled off some games because they competed.

Never have I tried to lose on purpose at something unless it was to let a child win.  I don't even know how you think like that if you are a competitive person?

But they don't have Curry and Dreymond on the court together right now. They didn't enter the season trying to tank. But things happen. 

You watch. They're saying what? Month to few months for Curry? Do you think if they are 6-20 or something at the time he is able to come back, they'll happily throw him out there? For what? The season is lost at that point. Bringing him back at that point will only mean risking losing their top 20 protected first round pick. 

The players are trying to win. Nobody is trying to lose on purpose. That was my point. The coaches are trying to win too. But some seasons, for one reason or another, are more for developing young guys than to just try and make the 8 seed only to go home in a week and a half. 

The Knicks are a perfect example of why a team should commit to a tank. They wasted how many years being in NBA purgatory? The Sixers, on the other hand, committed to a few bad seasons and now they're perennially favorites in the East. If the Warriors are dead in the water when Curry is able to come back, they'd be better off sticking with their young guys and hoping to reload quickly the following year with a high pick.


Also--you saying "not trying to be worse." This is like what Ponce mentioned--its more management. You'll know by the moves they make or don't make at the trade deadline what they want from this season. Or even moves right now. Curry might be out a few months. If management truly wants and thinks they can win THIS year, they will be on the phones to try and improve via trade today. But, by all indications, they are running with the young guys instead.

Turn out yes, once they were 0-11 they benched Painter for Dan Orlovsky and went 2-3 over the last 5 games (With Luck pretty much secured)
