I am cautiously hopeful for the FF7 remake. I hope they do it well (and get it on XB1 sooner rather than later).

Is this the same game lineage that was on the 8 bit nintendo back in the day?
Yep. 1-3 were on the NES. Or rather 1 was on the NES/Famicom and 2-3 were on the Famicom.  4-6 were on the SNES/Super Famicom. 4 and 6 were released as 2 & 3 in the US on the SNES.  Everything since 7 has been developed for Playstation, many with eventual ports for other systems.
I only ever played 1, 2 and 3 (US version). Is there a way to play the original 2 and 3 without learning Japanese? Have they ever been released in the US? Famicon is basically the Japanese NES, right?

    Yes to everything.
2 was first released in the US for PS1 as Final Fantasy Origins (it included 1 & 2).  You can also find it for Game Boy Advance, iOS/Android, Wii/Wii U/3DS virtual console, & the Playstation Store.
3 was first released in the US for Nintendo DS and can also be found on iOS/Android, Wii/Wii U/3DS virtual console, Playstation Store, and Steam.

Oh, FF2 is also on the Famicom Classic (JP version of the NES Classic) but that would likely be in Japanese.

Were the original 2 and 3 not as good, or why did they skip over them? I've never played them.
Which one had the giant chicken you can ride? Was that 2 (US) or 3?

TMNT was an ambitious game in level design and character selection but was hampered by the NES not having enough horsepower to run it thus making it very frustrating.  If it didn’t have ninja turtles and pizza it would not be remembered as kindly.

The top down Zelda games are the best. 3D Zelda games have shit controls that everyone gives a pass in reviews.

I haven’t played much of FF after the 7th game.  I kind of tapped out of JRPG games after they had the technical capability of adding voice acting and anime cutscenes.  The bigger the hair got, the more my interest dwindled... still play one every once in a while.  The new Dragon Quest game on PS4 is pretty good and old school.

Giant chickens?!  Haha - chocobos, I think the second game was the first time they arrived, and they've been around since.  Love chocobos.

I don't think they skipped over 2 and 3 as much as there was a weird conflict in the numbering of games between the Japanese and American releases.

I've never played 2.  I thought 3 was a pretty fun game and it would've been a breakthrough at the time had it had a proper North American release.  it was the first FF to introduce the Job class system as well as added battle commands like Steal & Jump and the Summon skill.
I'm not sure why they skipped over them. I might just be talking out of my ass here but I think it was due to the lack of interest in RPG's in the west.

No, they were actually skipped over.  Final Fantasies I-III were all developed for the Famicom in Japan, but only I got a NA NES release.  FF IV-VI were developed for the Super Famicom in Japan, but only IV and VI saw release on the Super NES.  Those were released in NA as FF II & III, which is where the numbering conflict comes from.  Everything since VII has been developed for Playstation and all US entries have been numbered properly since.

I appreciate the background!  I'm not sure why but I had thought, say, the second Final Fantasy was released as II in Japan and IV in the US.  I feel about as cool as Quina Quen.

Oh and I forgot.  XIV was not developed for Playstation, but rather Windows.  Due to terrible criticism it was completely scrapped and replaced by FFXIV: A Realm Reborn which was developed for Windows and Playstation.

Just read this morning that FFVII will only be released on PS4, which sucks big time.  But I guess I'll be getting a new gaming system, so that's cool.

Pretty amazing so far.  All of game 1 appears to just be Midgar, so there’s a lot added to it obviously.   Turning a 5 hour level into it’s own game.

Graphics, story,  and voice acting are all amazing.   Im about 75% finished with the main story

Awesome.  I can't wait to get it, but have to get a PS4 first.  I might play the remastered versions of X and XII before I'm able to though!

Getting pumped for FFVII Rebirth next month, then I see this: Sony Is Releasing a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth TV (gamerant.com)

I don't know much about TVs, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say this TV will be expensive and unnecessary to enjoy the game, and that I want it.
