For those questioning the efficacy of studies and reports regarding gun violence in 'Murica.

The study reveals some stark truths about living and dying in the United States. When compared to other high-income nations, as an American you are:

Seven times more likely to be violently killed

Twenty-five times more likely to be violently killed with a gun

Six times more likely to be accidentally killed with a gun

Eight times more likely to commit suicide using a gun

Ten times more likely to die from a firearm death overall

Homicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans 15 to 24 years of age, and the third leading cause of death among those 25 to 34 years of age. Investigators found that for these two groups, the risk relative to their counterparts in other developed nations is alarmingly elevated. Americans 15 to 24 years of age are 49 times more likely to die from firearm homicide compared to similarly aged young people in other high-income nations. For those aged 25 to 34, the risk is 32 times higher.

The shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, that left 59 people dead, 10 times that number wounded, and thousands of people with the psychological distress from being present at the scene during and after the massacre has once again raised the issue of what we as a nation can and should do about guns. The solution lies in not just focusing on Las Vegas and the hundreds of other mass shootings that have occurred in the United States in the last 14 months, but rather to underscore that on average almost 100 people die each day in the United States from gun violence. The 36 252 deaths from firearms in the United States in 20151 exceeded the number of deaths from motor vehicle traffic crashes that year (36 161).1 That same year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 5 people died from terrorism. Since 1968, more individuals in the United States have died from gun violence than in battle during all the wars the country has fought since its inception.2

Guns do not make individuals, their families, or homes safer and they result in far more deaths to loved ones than to an intruder intending to cause harm.3 Often forgotten is that 60.7% of the gun deaths in 2015 in the United States were suicides.1 Means used to attempt suicide matter; guns will result in suicidal deaths well over 90% of the time, whereas ingestion of pills or wrist cutting will be unsuccessful more than 90% of the time. The majority of people who try to commit suicide but survive the attempt will not go on to die from suicide4; if the attempt is with a gun, there will be no second chance at life.

Guns kill people. More background checks; more hotel, school, and venue security; more restrictions on the number and types of guns that individuals can own; and development of “smart guns” may help decrease firearm violence. But the key to reducing firearm deaths in the United States is to understand and reduce exposure to the cause, just like in any epidemic, and in this case that is guns.

    Nothing can be done?
I don't get why that is quoted so much here, the only people I ever hear say it are the anti-gun crowd. So who are you quoting?
Why does Trump keep getting brought up and blamed? Did we already forget we had 8 years of Obama? And that Columbine happened while Clinton was president? But yes, lets blame it all on Trump and the maga voters.
Things can get done. They just don't.

That is incredibly sad news about Sydney.

The only reason nothing was done under Obama is because the Republicans blocked him from getting anything done. He tried hard.
I don't think anyone blames Trump directly here - he doesn't give a flying fuck about the dead or about anything, really. People continue blame the GOP, and quite rightly, which just happens to be lead by Trump at the moment, and Trump isn't doing a thing to try and change the GOP's mind. So I'm not sure how you expect people not to lay blame where it belongs.

Obama had his chance too though, but they made healthcare the hill they were going to die on so gun reform was tossed aside. He could have made it a priority, but I think he also knew anything he did would be overturned in a few years, much like the assault rifle ban. It just would have been feel good regulation until Republicans took over. It's beyond fucked up that it's the way it is though. The gun lobby are all lifelong evil empire hell seekers.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Blame is mostly on the Republicans (politicians and voters alike) and all on the gun lobby

Sorry My2. I realize you’re tired of taking shots (no pun intended)... but holy shit, man. Stoooopid. I guess when you gut public education you can do whatever the f**k you want with the befuddled masses.

Active shooter drills are to be made fun of?  That s pretty low bud.
They are to be made fun of. When this is the response the greatest country in the world serves up as its solution to their mass shooting epidemic... it’s laughable.

It’s the equivalent of Bobby Knight’s rape comment.

    I know.

The response to a country’s pattern of mass murder is to run drills so people are ready to participate as victims.

If mass murder is inevitable given you refuse to develop meaningful gun laws...

New Zealand ‘ain’t playin’. They are tackling the problem. The US- for decades no less- accepts mass murder as a facet of life. These recent moronic arguments about population size and the usual classics are not legitimate.

    Well put

It seems obvious to me that most gun owners, the gun lobby, Republicans, the gop not only don't  want to do anything at all about the mass murders in general and the killing of innocent children in particular,  but they JUST DON'T  CARE ABOUT DOING ANYTHING TO STOP OR MITIGATE THE SENSELESS MASS KILLINGS AND MURDERS OF CHILDREN.

NZ gets it but Americans could care less

    SAD!

There were a bunch of people with survivors guilt after 9/11 my cousin being one of them.  He had to do a lot of therapy.

    SAD!
There were a few instances that I know of from history that the US/states did something.

After the Black Panthers expressed their 2nd amendment rights California Governor Ronald Reagan quickly signed an unlawful open carry law.

The Brady Bill was introduced after Reagan and Bill Brady were shot.

New York passes one of the toughest gun laws banning assault rifles, high capacity mags and ammo stockpiles after Sandy Hook.

After Las Vegas there is a ban on Bump stocks in some states.
