When you have to think about it, band names are stupid.

Car Seat Headrest - Toledo chose the name "Car Seat Headrest" as he would often record the vocals to his early albums in the back seat of his car for privacy.

Blue Cheer:  A variety of LSD developed by Owsley Stanley

Jethro Tull:  Named after the man who invented the seed drill.  Ian Anderson later became a salmon farmer.  No Ian, salmon do not grow from seeds.  Stick to the flute.

Mission of Burma: One of the band members (I think it was Clint Conley) spotted a sign on a Burma consulate building and they went with Mission of Burma.

Buffalo Springfield:  Seen on the side of a steamroller was the name of the company, Buffalo-Springfield Roller Company.  The rest is history.

New York Dolls:  David Johansen and company were looking for a name a spotted a doll factory in New York.  Put on your dresses, boys.

My husband would be the knowledgeable Brian of the family.  You should know that by now!

Didn't mean to dampen the fun.  Perhaps I can find some lovely facts. I don't believe that they included many of M's death metal bands.  They have some super swell names!

311 was named after a police code for indecent exposure. “We have a 311 in progress, a bunch of kids skinny dipping in a pool.”
Duran Duran was named after the antagonist in the movie Barbarella.
The Misfits after the film of the same name.
Green Day because they love weed.
Bon Jovi is a phonetic spelling of Jon Bongiovi’s surname.
Foo Fighters is an old war term for unidentified flying objects.
Sting was dubbed so because he wore a black & yellow striped shirt at one of the early bars he used to play in.
Verica Salt after the Charlie & the Chocolate Factory character.
    REO Speedwagon after the vehicle.
Guns n Roses after Tracy Guns and Axl Rose.

You do know that none of them were actually named Ramone.
Joey was Jeff Hyman, Johnny was John Cummings etc.

The origin of the name was derived from Paul McCartney's pre Beatle stage name of Paul Ramon

From my husband's collection of music:
Jungle Rot - The band's name refers to jungle rot, an infection of the feet, which people developed in the jungle when their military boots got wet and were left on.

Or was it because "Green Mind" was already being used elsewhere?

Well, OK, you knew I had to sneak those guys in somehow, right?

Speaking of Dinosaur Jr, they (as all Dino FANATICS! know) were originally just "Dinosaur" until some old San Francisco farts ... I mean ... a group of esteemed musician members from classic 60's bands including Big Brother, Quicksilver, The Dead, and Jefferson Airplane had already named themselves The Dinosaurs and threatened to sue those upstart freak sceners from Amherst, Massachusetts who decided, OK, we'll be "Dinosaur Jr.*"

*Apparently they've added a period to Jr (that's what their official site shows.  I have no idea what Wikipedia says,  )
