In the Round

I've been watching Arcade Fires tour with the stage in the middle of the arena. It looked fantastic.  Could this work for pearl jam I wonder. Maybe a theme for the layout.

i wish i wish i wish i wish, i guess it never stops

    I would like that!

Metallica has done it too and I thought that was great.

Seen a few shows in the round and i'm not a big fan. Of course if they did I'd be there.

Would be pretty badass if the pit was 360 degrees around the stage though

I saw Yes and ELO in the round, probably a couple more bands that I don't recall. That was a big thing when I was first going to concerts.

I haven't seen anyone do that in a long long time, though.

You could never do GA in the round.

Imagine the complaints. Qued from the night before, in first to get on the rail. Band come on stage to realise they are behind the stage.

Tell that to all the bands currently doing it.  It actually makes GA less problematic

    Yep!

The band moves around to different parts of the stage so you'd get to interact with a different band member during the course of the show.

The idea is good - more people get close and stuff. The problem is that it turns a bit gimmicky live. Like Metallica - with 20 different mics James walks around too and the drum set being rotated. He landed right in front of me for Unforgiven though  :o

But the basic idea is cool. And as long as it doesn't turn into specially constructed lights to swing on - I'm cool with it.

Are we talking a stage that rotates or just a round stage in the middle of the arena?   The rotating stage might be cheesy.  A fixed stage is not.

The last three times I’ve seen U2 they have had a regular stage at the end of the arena where they play most of the show but they also have a walkway down the middle of the arena to a small round stage towards the back of the floor.  They do a good job of moving back and forth and it creates a ton more rail space for people on the floor.

I'm thinking a stage in the middle of the arena.  That can't move.. And we can see Mike running around the entire stage!!!

I would favor a u2 type set up too.  More people get a chance to be close to the band.

except when I saw U2 in Philly this year the band spent most of the time on the main stage and Bono was up and down the ramp and barely ever in front of the band. It's like the band was just a backup band. it was strange a bad way to watch the show. do i focus on the band or on Bono?  I didn't like it at all.

I was talking about a rotating circle in the middle of the arena.

"In the round" and playing on a round stage are two entirely different things.

Agreed.  The U2 setup basically blows up most of that lining up nonsense.  Almost everyone on the floor at U2 is only about 3 people off the rail at any given time.  It kind of spreads the wealth around.

I thought they already did this in Champaign in 2003.  Not positive because I didn’t go to the show, but I thought I remember reading this.

Pearl Jam was considering a separate "acoustic stage" at FOH, ie near the mixing desk in 2013. Taken from Karrie Keyes blog, the band's monitor mix engineer:   https://soundgirls.org/test-run/

"In the process of designing this acoustic stage – I go to see Fleetwood Mac (which was a fantastic show), and as I sit in the audience, I try to imagine this acoustic stage right in the middle of the audience and honestly it scares me. The acoustic stage eventually gets scrapped and I am relieved."
