Philadelphia Halloween 2009 - Spectrum Closing Show

We took our kids (then 10 and 13) to all four shows. The "little" guy was pre-growth spurt (he's now 6'4") and the concourse was a terrifying experience for him. He also got a great "don't do drugs!" education, since a guy sitting a row or two behind us night 1 was tripping on way too much acid.. My son still talks about that -- "Everything's covered with moss!" But other fans were really nice to him, and he had a great time. I got him tickets to Fenway 1 this year. All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.0

I had to post for this great thread, I went to nights 3 and 4, and yes 3>4 but the build up to 4 was unreal. I live in the Baltimore area but was born in the Philly area and never miss a philly show, it is an event and the tailgating is unreal. We got up there around noon and decided after a few drinks to catch the flyers matinee game. Went back to tailgating and although we weren’t on the floor had a blast. The concert was more of an event and the Rockin isn’t the free world closer was perfect. Loved the opening with boxing gloves on, Devo and of course mentioning all of the rumored guests. Still spin this every Halloween with a smile on my face.0

It was a great tour. Normally I just followed Pearl Jam on the West Coast as I am in Reno. Had already seen them at Outside Lands and the 4 shows in Universal City (LA) and San Diego. When they announced the Spectrum shows I had to figure out how to make it work. Since I had already taken a bunch of time off for the shows I had seen I was only able to see the one show on Halloween, which I had to do as I had seen the other 2 Halloween shows. I convinced my brother to make the trip as well.
I flew out of Reno to Las Vegas, met up with my brother and off to Philly on a Red Eye. Made it to the hotel and headed straight to the Spectrum. Go to 10 Club will call and hit the lottery, 9th row. We knew the night would be amazing. The show was off the charts, my favorite up until Seattle 2 Home Show. I received a text message from my younger brother at some point during the show as Joe Buck, who was calling the World Series Game, commented on how loud it was over at the Spectrum. After the show got out we went across the street to a bar to watch and celebrate the end of the Phillies-Yankees game.
Flew back home.
Flight Time 13 hours time in Philly 10 hours.
To top it off my wife was 7 months pregnant with our first born.
Sorry not a lot of show details, but it was my top show at the time show 71 (now at 73) because how crazy it was to fly longer than be on the ground and my wife was so accommodating.
I have other experiences if you want to follow up. My favorite part of this tour were the sports shirts that were tied to the shows. I still wear my taking down the Spectrum shirt.

close to 50 shows and night 3 was the best concert I've witnessed both crowd & setlist wise. The energy in the spectrum was on another level that night. great memories for unbelievable run.

I’ve been to 30+ shows and night #3 is probably still the best show I’ve seen. (Go back and forth with the philly ten album show)
I’ve been lucky to catch some amazing shows that top many people’s all time lists, but philly 3 probably had the best set list and the crowd was insane. Couldn’t believe it when they played Hold On for the first time that night.0 -

My buddy won the lottery for night 1 and I was lucky enough to catch Jeff’s wristband at the end of the show

Also... opening bands that week were awesome... Social Distortion and Bad Religion. And I grabbed my all time favorite piece of PJ merch - the original Safe Travels keychain.

I went to all 4 shows that week. I too agree night 3 was the best. My PJ ticket buddy won the lottery on Halloween night and we were 2nd row in front of Mike. It would have been ideal if not for the fan in the front row who brought her young child, maybe 3 years old. She proceeded to ignore this child to the point where even Mike pointed from the stage and said, is he ok? Those of us in the first 4 rows or so directly behind her were more concerned about her child than she was. That is the only negative memory I have of that night. I still have a piece of the confetti.
If you want something to podcast about this show or any show that week, you must speak to Elwayvedder.

Amazing show. I won the PJ lottery and was like 6 rows back, almost dead center. Met up with a friend of mine and his wife who have been PJ fans forever and the guy who had my other ticket and I took turns sharing our awesome seats with them during the show. My friend is from Maryland, and I wanted to give him a little Philly flavor so instead of Geno's or Pat's - which I knew would be packed - we brought a tomato pie from an Italian deli in Norristown to tailgate with and he loved it. To this day whenever we talk he mentions that show and the tomato pie.
Lots of great Spectrum memories for me. From sneaking out of the house and taking the train to the city with friends in junior high to see Ozzy (my first concert), to the 'Angus Bucks' falling from the ceiling during an AC/DC show on the Razor's Edge tour when they recorded their Money Talks video, to the Pelle Lindburgh dedication before a Flyers vs. Oilers game shortly after he passed. The place was old and dirty, but felt like grandma's living room if that makes sense. Just a place that you remember fondly because you knew you felt good any time you were there - even though it was dated and smelled like mothballs.
RIP Spectrum.

The show had a special community feel, notable in particular due to the size of the venue. 10Cers everywhere. I drove up from DC, having traveled there from WA State for work reasons, and brought my younger brother. I talked with many strangers, inside the Spectrum, and outside in the parking lot. The World Series was going on next door, which was strange and cool, all at the same time. The end of the Spectrum was a big deal too--the Spectrum was a big deal in sports, especially growing up in the 1970s and the 1980s. They played and played and played. The set list was incredible. And the Devo thing was very cool--sharpens the memories and laughs.

we were suppose to hook up with some fans/friends for a cannabis score but they bailed on me/us cause they said they were really sick and somehow couldn't pull it together. wtf i thought?
and the mean people in our section were not friendly about sharing at all and burned pretty much the whole show.....
the balloon drop was so kewl

I was at these shows and I would love to share a project that I am working on to keep the memory of the Spectrum alive: Philly Spectrum S (www.PhillySpectrumS.com - @PhillySpectrumS on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter). When they knocked down the Spectrum they had a large auction where you could bid on almost anything from the Spectrum. I bid on and won the 'S' that spelled SPECTRUM on the side of the arena. Since then I have made it my mission to use this to tell the story of the Spectrum by getting it signed by the Flyers (signatures in orange), Sixers (signatures in red), Musicians (signatures in gold), Executives (signatures in white) and Entertainers (signatures in silver) who performed at the Spectrum. To date, approximately 100 legends have signed the S including Mike McCready (https://www.phillyspectrums.com/mike-mccready) and Jeff Ament (https://www.phillyspectrums.com/jeff-ament). I would love to come on the podcast to talk about the project and my goal of adding Eddie, Stone, Matt and Boom one day.
