Posters - Mysteries, myths, and curiosity

MilestoneMilestone Posts: 1,100
I've always wondered about a few PJ poster related topics.  Perhaps some of you know the answers to some or all.  These questions are not intended as criticism and are purely just out of curiosity. (Please forgive me if this has already been discussed.  I attempted a search of past threads).

1) Who actually decides what artist(s) will create a poster for a particular show?  Band members? 10C?
2) Is that decision made prior to seeing a design, draft, or concept?
3) Is it a tightly guarded secret as to how many Show Edition prints are made?  What would the effect be if the public knew?
4) Do the 10C website "show edition" prints ever make an appearance in the given location of a concert?  In other words, did the Chicago posters on sale on the website ever actually spend a minute in the state of Illinois?  Or were they shipped directly from print to the Seattle 10C to be sold later?
5) I truly don't know much about silk screen production.  I've been inside one artist studio where each is "hand pulled".  It seemed like a fairly pain-staking process.  How are these newer stadium posters being made in such large quantities?  These are still "hand pulled" or just cranking out of some massive machine somewhere, never being in the same room as the artist?
6) Is a "variant" an intentional run of posters made with the intent to sell?  Or are they originally prototypes, just for the artist to check out color schemes to decide on the larger run?

Thanks in advance, for any insight.

At one time, artists did express interest in particular show(s).  That doesn't mean they will be selected though.

Supposedly, the band does approve all merchandise.  IMO, vast majority is rubber stamped.

Prior to 2013, SE often ran between 800 -1200.  2013 to present, SE run between 1600 - 2400.  Ballparks more.

At this point, no.  Unless there is unsold posters.

Yes, slow process.  Most artists use printers and do no do this themselves.  The printing company is sometimes listed on the poster too.

Variants are not prototypes.  Varients feature different colors, inks or paper.  Sometimes different "characters" or text.

    Thanks for responding.
As for variants, is the purpose to try out colors, inks, or paper with the intent of deciding what the official run will be?
Or is there another purpose for artists making variants?

Some, like Thomas's (especially the train), look like they go straight from some Adobe program to a printer.

The numbers were taken from an order sheet from back in the day.  I just copied the runs.  I'm sure that someone has a pic of the actual photo somewhere.

So I take it that the run #'s are indeed not common public knowledge?

That is correct.  I forgot how the person obtained the paper but it gave great insight on to what was printed and why certain prints were so hard to find.

It was Andy I think that was looking for the Perth forever and finally landed one.
