I know a lot of people here regard EV as their favourite singer and of course he is one of mine but there are quite a few I put above him, Nick Cave being one of those. He doesn't perhaps have the range some other singers have but he makes up for that with tone, clarity, delivery and control and tops off his talents with his songwriting ability. I don't know another artist who can write tongue in cheek humour, black comedy, thought provoking lyrics, beautiful ballads and love songs and some pretty deep, disturbing subject matter to such a consistent high standard. As a live performer he acts like conductor for the music, when he is gentle the movement on stage is very minimal and subdued but when he goes completely nuts the whole band follows suit and it's really amazing to watch. He also looks pretty scary when he stares in your direction and is always impeccably dressed for his performance. Yeah, I quite like him.... ;)

Brilliantly vibrant description :D I have only seen him live once but it was exactly as you describe, his intensity both scares and fascinates me.I also put a number of singers above E.V for these reasons.

I quite like Nick too :D

This is a great example of Nick at his best, slow brooding intro building to an intense crescendo.... :D

This version of an old Birthday Party song is really great too.... :)

And a very delicate one.... 8-)

Thanks to this thread I'm going to have a Nick Cave week.........

Thanks for those brilliant links :D

He does the best version of Stagger Lee I have ever heard

Here's another great Nick Cave video, starting sweetly but getting intense pretty fast.

Bonus points for spotting the former '80s teenage heartthrob. And no, I'm not meaning Jarvis Cocker. :D

I'm fine with experimental music (to a point), but I thought this was just taking the piss. There was absolutely no way you could even just 'let go' and try to get 'transported' by the sounds - there was nothing pleasing to the ear. For the first 10 minutes or so, you could see the puzzled faces of the audience (and not a single sound heard from them - too flabergasted). This went on for ever and ever - this clip doesn't show the worst bits either! So many people (including Rob and I) just walked out. It's something I hate to do but I just couldn't bear it!

Now Joe Gideon & The Shark (whom I had never heard before), is very different but very pleasing.. you can drift away with this!

No, it was a one man band called Ghostwriter. It was just him growling over a guitar and it was excruciating :?

Any fans of Nick Cave? Personally can't get enough of the guy, although I'm a sucker in particular for The Birthday Party and Grinderman (Grinderman 2, specifically)..Love his dark imagery and growl

Here's an artist retrospect of the man http://www.resonantpassage.net/nick-cave-a-musical-career-to-be-emulated/

didn't see this thread so I made my own. good to see some fans out there.

I had the immense pleasure of seeing Nick Cave live for the first time last night - and in my home town as well.    It was one of the most extraordinary gigs that I have ever been to - so good that my brain is still processing it!  This is what the NME had to say - including some cool clips from the show - http://www.nme.com/news/music/nick-cave-bad-seeds-kick-off-uk-arena-tour-epic-bournemouth-show-2144303

I got to see him for the first time a couple years(?) ago. It was phenomenal. His energy and showmanship made me wish I had actually wedged myself up front.
I hope he does another Grinderman record. I feel like his last record was therapy to deal with his son's death. I respect that and I appreciate the album, but I'm hoping he puts out something with a little more oomph on the next release.

Went to see him with Warren Ellis last night and it was easily one of the best live shows I have ever seen. First time seeing them live and just blown away. Absolutely incredible.

Really looking forward to their show at Massey Hall, I’ve seen Nick solo and with the Bad Seeds, but never just he and Warren. Glad you enjoyed the show.

The on-stage line-up is Nick, Warren, 3 back-up singers and one other fella who plays guitar, drums and keyboards.

Cave fans, if you haven't seen it, be sure to check out the Wim Wenders film "Wings of Desire".  Has a cool scene with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
