After I did the Moline poster (above), I figured I probably should do cool things with a couple others from 2014, too. So this is what I did with St. Paul and Cincinnati. Cincy I tried to play off the circles and lines in the Pendleton art. I think it was a good idea. Execution-wise, meh ...

    That Cincy looks great!

Was this question answered? I never use Michael’s. Their employees might be trained to frame, or they may send them out, but I just don’t trust that over professional framing companies - large or small. There are several professional framing places where I live (in the DC area), and I look for groupons for them. Saves me a lot of money (my favorite one is for a $100 credit towards framing for $30) and they really know what they are doing.

Some people really don't like Michaels.

I take mine there because its always the same girl who does it for me and she rocks. I trust her 100%

It really depends on who you get at the store I think.

  • I agree.  I've used Michael's before and the guy I work with has put together some great frames for me (none of which have been gig posters actually).  They're expensive as hell though.

True, They are expensive. There are usually promotions going on too. Like 50% off custom framing. So id hate to see the overall price if it wasn't 50% off. Yikes.
  • Even with their ever-changing and always confusing array of discounts they're still expensive, or at least have been for me.

I've had all of mine done at Michaels. I usually wait til there's a 70% or 85% off promo, and it still runs $200-$300.

Ok, agreed. It does depend who you have doing the framing, and if you have a regular person, that makes all the difference.

Michaels did a kick ass job for me, but yeah, they are expensive. Over $300 for mine AFTER the 50% discount. I had some gift cards for Michaels though, so easy decision. I really don't care where I go, as long as they do a good job and it's not a rip off.... with gift cards, it wasn't a rip. I don't see the reason for not liking Michaels for the job they do though. I have never seen anyone who had a Michaels job done who wasn't really happy with what they did. I guess it really must matter which store you go to, and that all the stores in my region are good.

  • Micheal's has always done a great job for me too, but even with coupons they're expensive. I went there this past weekend to get in on their last deal (something like 70% + 25% off), and the two 12 year olds in the back talking and giggling never came out to see if they had any customers. It was the push I needed to start ordering from American Frame online.

i would never attempt to my own matting because I know i'd fuck it up, so I'll never not take something to a professional framer, but that's just me. And I definitely can't fault Michaels staff where I am - they are all lovely.
Michaels has a "we'll beat any competitor by 10%" clause or something, do they not? Doesn't that mean they would technically always be most affordable assuming one bothers to get proof of the competitor's pricing?

How do you all afford to frame your posters?  I finally moved into a house about 3+ years ago.  About a year in I underwent the project to frame my posters.   Ended up framing about 20 of them.    I chose quantity over quality.   Brought them to a local framing shop and they did pretty simple custom cut frames.   Metal black frame with glass front.   About $50 (Canadian) each give or take $10 depending on the size.   That cost me well over $1000 to do.   Now when I get new ones I get them framed the same way so they match.  They look pretty good, but not as cool as the matted ones people post on here.

i cant afford it. But i love a fancy frame job, so I told my family to give me GCs for the framers for my bday and xmas, lol. I will continue to do this so that I can get a couple more framed the same way.

I frame mine as I get them with frames from Micheals, also purchased a used mat cutting kit and am trying to keep the costs down that way.

My b-day and fathers day is only a week (or so) apart so my family will get me a combo b-day and fathers day gift of a framed poster.

It is expensive but I had blank walls before I started framing posters.  I can't imagine anything else up there.
