    Yeah, there will almost certainly come a time in the not-that-distant future when pretty much everyone has a 3D printer in their homes .... Hopefully by then they will have figured out how to build 3D printers that simply will not print guns, and that can be worked into law. Like I mentioned before, one would think some kind of built-in software can be devised for this purpose and foil all but the proficient hackers.

    Exactly, and it seems that most aren't aware that many different materials can be used in 3D printing. It's not like they only make things out of weak plastic.

    I also remember a time when Glocks were made fun of for being too "plastic". They seem to be doing pretty well in the killing department these days.

    Also, you're not the target audience of these printers, yet. I'm sure more appealable options for you will come along, but ultimately they know who they need to cater these to and will follow suit with the ability to replicate classic assault rifles.

      When I got my kid a happy meal the other day he got an Incredibles toy; I didn't realize they handed AR-15's with Happy Meals in Sweden.  Sick!

    I think you might be underestimating the appeal here, even when "real" guns are easy to get. It will likely be a hell of a lot cheaper to print them than buy them, it won't require the person to deal with any bureaucracy or anything, it's simply a novelty and actually fun to make your own, people will be able to alter them/"personalize" them, creativity will become a factor for hobbyists, and, of course, criminals and others who can't get a gun through legal channels will be all over it, especially if they make the ones that don't set off metal detectors. There are a ton of reasons why 3D printed guns will be an issue in places they are relatively easy to get "the old fashioned way".
