Watched this documentary on HBO last night. I am shocked, saddened, enraged and discouraged at the sheer number of rape kits across the US that have never even been tested (there's over 200,000).
In Detroit, unprocessed rape kits sat in the 1000s in a dilapidated, old building with no windows.
It appears rape is the crime people can get away with most easily- especially if the woman is slightly impoverished and a minority. In LA- if I remember correctly- 1 in 20 reported rapes results in a conviction.

There isn't any money in solving rapes and murders. All the money for new guns and tanks comes from drug busts and the subsequent asset seizures. Rape is hard to convict and that statistical difficulty is reflected in a departments "numbers".
I have heard also that until the rape kit is tested the case isn't on the books in terms of making quotas on case closures, but I don't know if that's true and while it would be easy to believe, I suspect it's not true or at least oversimplified.Monkey Driven, Call this Living?0 -

One of the major issues was that serial rapists who could easily have been identified through the rape kit processing have been allowed to flourish.
Kits were eventually being destroyed for statute of limitations.

And the police routinely question credibility of the accuser on sickening levels (see link above regarding the case in Spain).
Many police are so desensitized they only view 'stranger rape' as rape.

I like this... I really do: The incidents come less than a month after India approved the death penalty for the rape of girls younger than 12, and increased the prison term for the rape of older girls and women following nationwide disgust over a particularly gruesome rape and murder of a Muslim girl in Jammu & Kashmir state.
If you're some f**king pig that has to rape a child... you should die. No rehabilitation. No trying to understand you. Just die.
Leave women alone for fuks sakes.

I'm not a violent person, but I couldn't help but feel OK about the part of the story where it said, "A current of rage shot through Chennai last week after the police arrested 17 men, ages 23 to 66, for the assaults.
