    The Verve

How does a band like The Verve get in this conversation?  The only song I've ever heard from them wasn't even theirs...

    Cranberries?  Close enough, lol.
    Radiohead?
    Front 242?
    Bush?
    Garbage?

Because ‘History’ is one of the greatest songs of the 90s. And Noel Gallagher wrote ‘Cast No Shadow’ about The Verve’s singer Richard Ashcroft, so he must have been doing something right!

Out of curiosity, which song wasn’t theirs?
The Verve “Bittersweet Symphony” Stolen From The Rolling Stones “The Last Time” The Verve biggest song ever “Bittersweet Symphony” is bittersweet to the band and singer Richard Ashcroft after a lawsuit ending up awarding all songwriting credit and royalties to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Yeah, I guessed that may be the song that tempo was referring to. Richard Ashcroft wrote the lyrics and music and they had negotiated to use a short sample of the strings from The Last Time. Then came the lawsuit and Jagger/Richards claiming songwriting credits and 100% of the royalties.
It’s still a Verve song, it just uses a short sample of another song.
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

I voted Blur, but Radiohead are streets ahead of everyone on the list. Oasis, James and The Verve are also high up
James is British? For some reason, I always thought they were Canadian. Good band.

Just watched the Made of Stone (Stone Roses) and Supersonic (Oasis) documentaries on Amazon Prime. Great stuff...forgot how many good bands from England came around the time. If I had to pick my favorite I'd go with Suede. Love Oasis and The Verve too, but Suede just killed IMO.
Amazing how the Stone Roses can sell-out 4 shows at the Etihad in Manchester, yet they can't really draw too many people outside the UK/Europe.

Yes that is the song.  I didn't care for that one.

Never really heard anything from them here in the states after that.  Maybe they are good but I never heard them.

Maybe you should check them out. The Verve were amazing, History, Sonnet, Lucky Man, On Your Own, Space and Time, Drugs Don't Work etc etc all classics.

I wish James were Canadian - then I would have certainly seen them play.

I think I thought that because they weren’t joyless like every other British band from the 1990s.

All of that good nature seems totally Canadian.

I would not say any of these bands are "bad" but if 90's British Rock and Pop bands were the only music in the world I would make my self play and sing a lot more than I do and start making records myself.
