The cover of It Makes No Difference was simply awesome. Wish there was somewhere to get a copy of it.

They got some radio play here in chicago. I know Golden and One Big Holiday got some play, and so has Off The Record. Its too bad they havnt gotten more attention. Anytime would be a great radio song too.
Its harder to get into the albums. When i first picked up It Still Moves, I really liked the harder rock tracks like one big holiday. Then i got into Golden, and after a long time songs like steam engine have really gotten to me. One of the big issues is how different the band sounds live vs in the studio. The studio stuff tends to have a really mellow/slow sound to it. But live the songs just tear it up.
Keep listening, and it will come around. It Still Moves is the best album in my opinion. At Dawn a close second. And Z is also great, but dif. Its more experimental, and i dont think it flows as well. However, songs like anytime and lay low actually do capture thier sound live, better than most other songs on the other albums.0 -
thanks for the list.
great idea.
Gideon really impressed me live in Albany and DC.
The recorded version just isn't the same.Teamwork. Rawk. Pwnage. Infinite Possibilities. YIELD. Hells yeah.0 -

MMJ is, in my opinion, very easily the best band I've seen opening for PJ. But I'm biased, as I was really into MMJ before they were even announced as the 1st leg opener.
Honestly, I like Z best out of all of their stuff. Some of the experimental studio stuff on This Tennessee Fire, At Dawn, and It Still Moves was a little too experimental for my tastes. I need a good beat and some harmonious acoustic or bad ass riffs. Z has plenty of both... from the great spaciness of Dondonte to the kick-you-in-the-ass drum opening and rif of Lay Low. Anytime and Wonderful Man are great, also.
Of their older stuff, one of the lesser-known mellow songs that I really got into was Bermuda Highway.
How about the opening lyrics to "Into the Woods": "A kitten on fire... a baby in a blender... both sound sweet... as a night of surrender." Holy crap.
But I think my all-time fave is 'Tyrone'. Great funk. Great riffs. Great lyrics. "They don't ever have to pay... don't have no cars... hang around in bars... try to hang around with stars.".
I'm disappointed I won't get to see them again in Pittsburgh.
I hope Robert Pollard does some old classic Guided By Voices stuff!Pittsburgh 4/26/03
Pittsburgh 9/25/05 (w/ Rolling Stones)
Albany 5/12/06
Pittsburgh 6/23/06
Denver 7/2/06

Pittsburgh 10/11/13
Charlottesville 10/29/13
Hampton 4/18/16
Philadelphia 9/7/24

just to let you know, Tyrone is an Erykah Badu cover song that MMJ used to do a lot, but i agree, it's badass0 -
