yeah it's funny...I just turned on my news feed on my computer and heard some chatter with sirens in the background. I assumed it was my local school shooting being reported on, then the guys says "Mr Weinstein has turned...."HughFreakingDillon said:

I don't know if that shouldn't be the headline. When you consider that the Weinstein story lead to one of the biggest news story in the past year and lead to one of the biggest movement in the past year. plus so far there doesn't seem to be alot of reports yet about the shooting.HughFreakingDillon said:

I agree in part. But it is part of a larger picture with CNN. more often than not, if there is an entertainment blockbuster at the same time as a societal blockbuster, entertainment gets the headline.fife said:

Agreed. We have to find a middle and try to make some type of real progressmrussel1 said:
What I'm trying to do is stay away from scoreboard keeping on this issue... yesterday a "good guy with a gun" wins, that's one chit for the right wing. Today, a school shooting.. a chit for the gun control side. It's pointless. Something has to be done but we should be reasonable. There won't be laws against conceal carry anytime soon, we aren't going to outlaw handguns (2A) and there won't be a mandatory gun turn in program. So long as we create this clear divide in language, no change will happen. The key to creating some reasonable gun controls that will reduce the prevalence and scale, is to win the "middle". There will be no convincing the hard right. So if we use hard left language, we alienate the middle and they throw their hands up exasperated.cincybearcat said:
Glad the shooter didn’t get a chance to shoot anyone else. Fact remains he got into the place and shot people and was running away when shot. So I hope the narrative doesn’t try to become that a civilian with a gun stopped a shooting.... cause it didn’t.mrussel1 said:

And the next Good Guy with a Gun might get overzealous and shoot a jogger running in the general direction away from the scene.cincybearcat said:

We are becoming desensitized. Mass shootings are just a part of American life now. Statistically, you're still unlikely to be caught up in one but some people will be the unlucky ones and it's just so unnecessary.1995 Milwaukee 1998 Alpine, Alpine 2003 Albany, Boston, Boston, Boston 2004 Boston, Boston 2006 Hartford, St. Paul (Petty), St. Paul (Petty) 2011 Alpine, Alpine 2013 Wrigley 2014 St. Paul 2016 Fenway, Fenway, Wrigley, Wrigley 2018 Missoula, Wrigley, Wrigley 2021 Asbury Park 2022 St Louis 2023 Austin, Austin 2024 Napa, Wrigley, Wrigley 2025 Nashville (II)0 -
Well, today's school shooting wasn't a mass shooting.... Yes, when the number of people shot in a school shooting is low, nobody's paying much attention, and when nobody even gets killed, heck, it's almost like a good day in the scheme of things.... I can't say I blame this on the news networks. They are just reporting what the masses have proven interests them the most.OnWis97 said:

Again without turning this tread into another topic, that story is not about a fucking celebrity, it is about a man who is accused of raping woman.HughFreakingDillon said:

Okay, so I am now for the banning of all guns. There has to be a way for homeowners to feel safe though. Perhaps a stun gun or some other type of weapon that absolutely can't be used for a mass shooting.
If you want to go hunting, then you can go through a background check, and rent a gun for the hunting trip.
I haven't thought through all the scenarios, but this is beyond ridiculous at this point. To those on this board that want to take no action, you are disturbed individuals and you may not even know it. It was like when I was collecting Pearl Jam vinyl and trying to get every color, I didn't realize at the time how stupid that was.
Like PJsoul said earlier, the fix won't come for several generations, but we need to start now. Like with climate change, we can't change climate today or tomorrow, but we can make changes that can impact 50 years from now.

Yeah, that's what I was about to say. I've re-thought this HFD, and I'm starting to feel like maybe you're minimizing the case and issues around it because he is a celebrity. Weinstein is a PROLIFIC sexual predator, with dozens and dozens of accusations laid against him, and the whole story was the catalyst that exposed a very profound problem of sexual abuse and harassment going on in Hollywood, which covers a whole lot of ground and people, and then the story lead to exposing this problem across the board in the society. This is THE story that started the #metoo movement. That he's a celebrity seems like the least important factor in this story, and I think that's how it's being treated. This is a huge story in its own right, and I think a lot of coverage of it is valid.fife said:

I think that just depends on the stories that are active at any given time. I think if what you're saying was really true, or at least true with any real consistency, we'd be seeing a lot more entertainment news on those networks that we do. Plus the point already made about them giving the audience what it wants, which to me means that it's not the mass media choosing. It's the audience.HughFreakingDillon said:

there are plenty of citizens saying ban all guns. no politicians, that I've seen, are saying ban all guns. I think that's what people are referring to when saying "nobody is saying ban all guns".PJPOWER said:
