Its a simple observational question. And it’s been proven that for the majority, those that have earned a college degree, or have been gone to college are more apt to taking on a wider view and balance ideas they agree with and disagree with and can make more informed opinions. They aren’t the “Fox News” of the right or the anything liberal the can find to read in the “left”. They are more centered and balanced with their ideas of the world. It could be argued that the college educated have merely been taught someone else's biases.Your boos mean nothing to me, for I have seen what makes you cheer0 -
The last couple of replies are observational and not data driven. Whether or not someone has friends who happen to be educated and close minded has little relevance to the claim made.
Matts, since you’ve claimed that there is proof that a college education leads to wider view points and a more balanced approach, how about you post that proof?my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0 -

this is what I was also responding to. I have not seen any real data to suggest such a subjective claim. in the absence of such data, I pose my own experience for context.oftenreading said:The last couple of replies are observational and not data driven. What either one is "worth" I guess is in the eye of the beholder. My undergraduate degree rounded me and sharpened my communication skills. While I avoid the trap of "educated = smart" because that's not true, I will say that my non-college friends could not do the jobs I've done...not because of intelligence, but because of the skill-set it provided me. Actually though, my liberal arts education would have made it tricky for me to advance. Job-wise, I'd have been better off in trade school, thought that's just not "me." So my masters (Urban and Regional Planning) helped make me employable. I've traveled most of the US and been to a few foreign countries and am glad I have. But the benefits really are apples-and-oranges. As for being well-read, I admit I should be better-read...again, valuable but still a bit apples-and-oranges.
One of the problems with this topic and this thread is it's so open to bragging and, in turn, defensiveness. As long as one has through through his/her options, his/her post-high school path is the correct one...for them and that's what matters.
For me, "being well read and traveled is worth more than any college education could teach you" is simply not true. And I would not want that to be true of my doctor or dentist either. But in general, I don't think we need to have pissing contests between all of these options.1995 Milwaukee 1998 Alpine, Alpine 2003 Albany, Boston, Boston, Boston 2004 Boston, Boston 2006 Hartford, St. Paul (Petty), St. Paul (Petty) 2011 Alpine, Alpine

I think putting education and life experience up against each other makes no sense whatsoever. What I think the only "right answer" here is that a person with more education and/or life experience is likely to have a leg up on those who have none of either.

My own personal experience is that, in general, college educated people are better at connecting things that on the surface, don’t appear connected. This improves ability to problem solve. They also are better at communicating thoughts and ideas in writing and verbally. They also tend to have a greater ability to see something from another persons viewpoint and can step outside of their subjective experience. I see this at work, where different education levels are doing the same job, and outside of work. I put ‘in general’ because there’s exceptions either way.0

Yes - education can develop and hone the very important skill of critical thinking. I personally think that is one of the most valuable things one can get out of education.Go Beavers said:My own personal experience is that, in general, college educated people are better at connecting things that on the surface, don’t appear connected. Graduated with an undergradIs this thread a thinly disguised sorter for labeling and categorizing amt users? Why would someone want to see this information in a political realm unless they planned on attacking/using it to their advantage. It is interesting, but it shouldn’t matter at all, the only thing that matters with regards to voting is your age to do so. Opinions/beliefs of amt posters are all equally important regardless of education.I'm like an opening band for your mom.0
