I was so heartened to see a photo of someone very close to me in one of Saturday's marches carrying a sign that said "Books not guns" (a rather private person or I would post the photo).  Kids reading more books are going to be less apt to go shoot someone.  More books for kids!
The kids at the school I’m student teaching at are OBSESSED with guns. They point their fingers at each other and “shoot” all the time, even though it’s strictly against the rules. They draw them on their papers when they are supposed to be working on stuff. It’s crazy. These are six year olds. Some of them even know the names and models of different guns.
Could have learned that from any number of video games.
Never heard a single one of those kids talk about video games. Been with them for over a month now. It’s an inner city school in western PA, many of the kids I am thinking of are transplants from Philly, like literally Philly said we don’t have enough public housing for these families, send them to Johnstown. Weird that they would be affording video game consoles and such, and on top of that not mentioning them at all, just the guns that are in them.
Not weird at all, as in not unusual.
I worked in an inner city school in south-central LA, probably one of if not the poorest districts in the country. Almost everyone (98%) qualifies for free lunch.
almost every kid had a smart phone better than mine and the newest video games.
Again, these are first graders. I’m sure they might have access to video games, but they never talk about them, and they talk about everything. I have one kid that’s obsessed with Mario, but he isn’t one of the gun nuts.

It’s simply a trickle down effect of our gun obsessed culture. I’ve seen it from kids who’s parents are in and out of prison, kids who have more of a redneck upbringing, and kids who are model students that have high family involvement in their education. And yes, they are all boys.
  • Maybe he watched too many movies? Or played violent video games all day? Or maybe he was just another “responsible” gun owner?

Colorado man shot neighbor in head five times over fight about dog, victim's fiancée says - Fox News https://apple.news/ArEbfruwGQwy-nySB1Fb3Fw

Another classic case of an emotional human acting like a f**king idiot before he has time to cool down.

He can rot in hell, but if he never had a gun... he wouldn't have used it when he was huffy. When you introduce a gun to a household... the risk factor for someone getting hurt or killed by the gun increases exponentially.

The MT is in a bubble. For the most part, people who come on here display reasonable thought and if you only frequent here... you might be optimistic for society.

If you read the comments under various social media posts... things don't always look so great. There is much ignorance out there. And not just the 'regular' ignorance... I'm talking extreme ignorance- the type of ignorance that distinguishes a person as an authentic and worthless turd.

    Many of them.

I do think that there are decent people who plugged their nose and voted for the orange unit. My hope is that these people are lamenting their choice. How could you not?

The economy is an issue when it's bad,  not when it's good.
  • To gun violence...

I feel that the psychological concept of 'relative deprivation' has something to do with the senseless slaughters in the USA.

It's a by-product of the capitalistic society coupled with the consumer driven mentality. When some guy finally figures out that he's been left out in the rain- no friends, no great future, no girls, no sweet materialistic objects that tend to define someone- they lash out and express their frustration/rage.

It's not the simple answer to the complex problem that plagues the States, but it is part of the answer. The USA (in my mind) is beginning to resemble the perfect storm: among many things... a growing divide, disenfranchised people, a massive wealth disparity, and very accessible weapons.

    Eesh.

Yup, just another “responsible” gun owner reacting “normally” to being pulled over. Clearly, the solution is more guns for everyone.

Seriously what happened to america?  my dad tells me stories of walking into hardware shops in the 50's and 60s and seeing hundreds of military ww2 surplus weapons for sale for literally less than $20 a pop with zero background check. "you over 18?  yeah.  cool, enjoy this (insert military surplus rifle from ww2)."  I mean these weapons were apart of the most destructive war in history and there wasn't any of the mass shootings that we see today.  and yes some of those were semi-automatic with high capacity mags.  what the heck happened to america?

And again, clearly the answer is more guns so when you abuse your dog, you can get shot in the back of the head. You know, because the armed citizen cares about the unborn or some stupidity.

Did Vegas have gun shows back then? Was gun ownership promoted? No, it was like religion, nobody’s fucking business. Now? You need it and if you don’t have it you’ll perish and your weak. For Christ sake the dog whistle of being “tactical” is sold with sunglasses, with camoed white people in the desert needing to be “tactical” so they can “see” the enemy. For fucking sunglasses. And that’s on straight cable, basic plan. I can’t begin to imagine watching Faux and friends and “the dark web,” like Unsung. And you wonder what’s changed?

Seriously what happened to america?  my dad tells me stories of walking into hardware shops in the 50's and 60s and seeing hundreds of military ww2 surplus weapons for sale for literally less than $20 a pop with zero background check. "you over 18?  yeah.  cool, enjoy this (insert military surplus rifle from ww2)."  I mean these weapons were apart of the most destructive war in history and there wasn't any of the mass shootings that we see today.  and yes some of those were semi-automatic with high capacity mags.  what the heck happened to america?
A huge percentage of that generation blew off steam by beating on their wives and kids, and they avoided the steam-buildup in the first place by ignoring their wives and kids altogether.
Not worse for sure, maybe better.
    Definitely different.
