I want to use a Pearl Jam song in a You Tube Video, legally. Does anyone know how to proceed?

I want to legally use a pear jam song in a YouTube video. I have no idea how to go about it. I've done some google searches, and can't make heads or tales of it. Has anyone here gone through proper channels to get permission to use a song? Any direction would be super helpful.

    If you are in the u.s., you should not have a problem using a PJ song as soundtrack for a video, but you just won't be able to monetize it.   YouTube has agreements with most of the major record labels where the artists or publishers or labels get compensated (to some degree) when their songs are played on YouTube.  But if you use one of those songs it will get flagged as copyrighted material and the video will be posted but you won't earn any ad revenue.  This is not an issue for most of us, of course.  But if you are trying to be a famous YouTuber or something than use copyright free tunes...

    I'm a YouTuber and am majoring in comm arts (digital media production) so I can help you with this here.

    Basically, the law is copyright and fair use. YouTube has a massive database of files and has a program that will recognize the pattern of billions of copyrighted material. If copyrighted material is recognized, it will immediately be flagged by YouTube and most likely demonetized (you won't be able to make money off of it.) Any action after that can be taken by the production  company, such as Warner Bros. They can chose to mute your video or block it from YouTube all together.

    Now Fair Use is a way of using copyrighted content without having to pay a fee, or in this case without having to be demonetized or worse by YouTube. To qualify as fair use, the use of the copyrighted material must be transformative and appropriate in size. Transformative meaning that the purpose of the content used in your video differs from the purpose of the original creator. For instance, if I just put Ten on YouTube with a black screen and only audio, it would not be transformative. Appropriate in size is less defined, but you can't use the entire song. Usually playing half or less is good enough to qualify.
