I really like how in 2003 they dropped it a step and began playing it in Am. It makes the song so much darker sounding. The original studio is fine, but I honestly don't even know I would classify it as a top 5 studio cover for the band. I wish one had been made during the Binaural sessions in Am (before Boom). Give Mike a ripping solo. Make it a little trippy. Record it binaural like maybe Sleight of Hand. Damn. That'd be unreal.

I remember hearing a "demo" version of it, has someone counting at the beginning and a a bit of a different feel.  Anyone else hear this?
Yeah i've heard that one too.  Very stripped back, no organ, has an almost subdued feel to it.

San Diego 06.  Ed really lets the crowd take over the "quite a crowd" and "rising up above it all" lines.  I'm sure he's done it at many other shows, but it really comes across great on this boot.

There is no shortage of great versions from 2003, 2005 and 2006.
I am biased but Ottawa 9.16.05 to me is the best version I have heard them play.

They played it in A-minor in 2000 as well. No Boom, both Mike and Stone on electric guitars.

    Studio Version :)
I hadn't heard the studio version in years until it came on Sirius this weekend. I was absolutely flawed at how perfect that song sounds.
IMHO, the studio version of "Crazy Mary" is the best thing Pearl Jam has ever committed to tape.
I mean this with love. I've been on this board 19 years, and that's the craziest thing I've ever read on here. I mean, I frequent the Moving Train most often here and you wouldn't believe the shit I've read there. But your post takes the cake.
    Wow! *LMAO

Okay then... Not to hijack the thread, but what, in your opinion, is been the best thing PJ has ever put to tape?

Yes this does sound really cool!! Ed's voice also in prime at 2003. Maybe 2000 I can never decide which tour I prefer.

    Bump this!

Can we please get a definitive list...

Firstly Ed needs to nail all his vocal parts without changing the melody too much and not sounding rushed or out of breath. Also 0 crowd singing or parts. Then obviously the longest ripping jams.

Also exclude all 2005 shows as the bootleg quality on this tour was especially awful. Even 2010 sounds bit shite.

2003 ones are sounding cool, always different melodies etc.
You probably have only heard the mp3s from 2005 as opposed to the 16 bit stereo flac files that are now available from this whole tour.

    Say whaaaat?!

I always thought it wasn't until a few years ago they took the recording from the soundboard and not using those shitty microphones facing out to the crowd. I don't think FLAC is going to change the mix and sound of these shows unless the FLACs are from a different source.

The best is April 28, 2003 Philadelphia Spectrum.

opened with it for the very first time surprising everyone.  Eddie’s voice sounds amazing.  “Crazy” way to start a terrific show.

Really? I could have sworn it was 03. I didn't have many boots with it from the 2000 tour though, so I'm not as familiar with it as the Riot Act tour where it was played almost every night. Thanks.

Just speaking in regards to 2005 specifically, the original release of those shows was only via MP3s.  In regards to the stylistic recording of the shows, to each his own, the ambiance mics mixed into the multi-track recordings is generally very well done.  Some venues don't come out as well as others.  The MP3s always sound pretty terrible to me, too much compression.
