So it seems that the modern day mass shooter has evolved and moved on to concert type events because of the high volume casualty odds and limited ability to control security. Outdoor concerts that aren't isolated make it easy access to proximity cover and indoor venues just need to get by minimal security.

The DA sounded like a jackass during the press conference. It seemed like he was almost smirking at times. It's our default; thoughts and prayer, god bless. Even though the people uttering it often times do not practice it.

I always wonder how someone that could do such a horrific thing could not have given off some clues about their mental instability.

Please don't equate violence and mental "instability"/mental illness.

This is one of those times that I wish they could have apprehended the shooter and ask him questions as to "Why"?!?

just watched a video of the shooter's brother being in total and complete shock. he said he spoke to him last week, the shooter sent his mother a new walker recently.......he knew he kept a couple handguns in a safe in his house, but never knew him to possess assault rifles. he is in total disbelief.

    Most recent open source details:

At least 58 people died and 515 were transported to hospitals after a shooting at the Las Vegas Strip, according to Las Vegas Law Enforcement. An off-duty Las Vegas police officer is among those killed. A police official said the gunman was firing from a hotel room on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay, where the suspect was found dead. Inside the room, authorities found at least ten guns, 200 magazines, two shooting platforms and cameras in the hallway, according to a live broadcast from FOX News. The gunman was identified as a 64-year-old man from the city of Mesquite, with no apparent criminal history.

Anothe misperception about gun violence is that the shooter's are "crazy lunatics" who must have given off all these signs. In most cases they are completely coherent and know exactly what they are doing up until the end. I would argue that it is crazy to sanely think something like this out and do it, so in some way it is a type of illness.

So how do casino's go forward with letting anyone in with what ever they wanna carry , i bet casino camera's will show him just casually walking in with is cache of weapons & ammo right past security ....unless he came into casino thru a backdoor still security measures will have to be totally revamped ...

Come on. I'm not saying mental instability equals violence. I'm saying to commit violence in this manner, something is wrong with your way of thinking and I would think your behavior beforehand would likely indicate something, at least in hindsight.

why? you'd have to be unstable to do something like this, don't you think?

That's a clearer way of explaining it than just saying "mental instability".

The automatic assumption that anyone who perpetrates violence must be mentally ill flies against a substantial body of evidence and simply perpetuates stigma against people who do have mental illness.

here is the part i don't get. they said he checked on Thursday. Are you telling me no one cleaned his room and/or saw anything in that room since Thursday? it is that easy to hide high powered rifles and ammo?

Could have easily brought that stuff in a golf bag.  Definitely big enough and no one would look twice at it.

So the answer is to do what to avoid this kind of scenario ?

He essentially had 3.5 days to set up so I'm guessing he made several trips getting everything up to his room to seem inconspicuous.  Appears that he was set up in one of the corner suites to shoot from two different angles.  Odd that no one sensed him acting differently because this seems like the type of assault that would take years to organize without raising suspension or red flags from anyone.

This is all new Jose.  No one was prepared for this because nothing like this has happened before.

No one has busted open a window of a hotel and shot at 40,000 people hundreds of yards away.

Who would think that this scenario is what you'd need to prevent?!?

Terrorists indeed come in many forms. In the USA, those of the white male form outnumber all the others.

Yeah, that was a fully automatic weapon. I remember a while back when a few people called me completely fucking ignorant about guns for talking about the dangers of fully automatic rifles in the wrong hands. Some said these were necessarily illegal too... and now that is starting to sound untrue. Honestly, I have never been given any reason to think that so-called "experts" on the subject know wtf they're talking about, and that there is actually false information out there for them to use as ammunition against gun control (and to misinform them while they think they are well-informed) - I'm starting to think they are often full of shit and will just say anything to defend gun rights, whether it's true or not.

    wtf
Well it's true. Everyone is terrified of the brown variety, while the greater risk by far are the white domestics. American fears are not often based on reality.

Well we did ban alcohol for minors, and we did make it illegal to sell to a minor, and we did make it illegal to drive intoxicated, and we did set up a system of regulatory laws to control the production and distribution of alcohol soooo...yeah, not a good analogy bud.

How so?  With all these laws and regulations in effect, there is no possible way a minor can get their hands on alcohol right?  I'm glad, cause I sure would hate to ever hear of a drunk 18 year old crashing and dying, or worse killing someone else.  That would never happen because laws and regulations are put in place right?
