Time to retire the "new" version of Corduroy?

What do people think? I personally love the original version (no slow down) and think slowing it down kind of kills the mood of the song. But I do understand the appeal of the slow down. If they're going to tour in 2018 (fingers crossed) I'd love to see them bring back the original way of playing it.

I think corduroy is best served when eddie or and stone n mike come together at one point of jamdom. Climax. 3-17-95 is certain to remind me

I love the new version. Listen to Greenville 2016. Eddie Says "Live from Greenville its Saturday night. Happy Record Store Day, Were gonna play you some records" He basically announced they would be playing a whole lp.
  • Did they ditch the 2014 version of Do the evolution with the singalong breakdown?

Or am I remembering that correctly...

I'd really like them to bring back the alternative version of Corduroy that they did at the Bridge School Benefit in '96 and a few times since.

Agreed... hate the slowdown on this one
  • imo one of their greatest songs and the norm should be to never fuck with greatness
having said that i like the new version. when they slow it down in the new version i'm always tempted to keep it going(in my mind&singing)
started off by me not digging that but eventually they won me over with their decision to change it up
=love it. especially love that they took the risk and went with a smart decision to keep it fresh. for them and for us
the sad news is now i don't think it will ever go back to the old version being played. which kinda sucks a tiny little bit  lol

I can't listen to those 2016 versions are all.

Think about it: I had to SKIP Corduroy! Awful.

I love the "new" version.  I think it's great that they're still trying to change things up at this point in their career.  Good stuff.

I love slowdowns in rocking songs, as long as they aren't too long.
They give you a second to catch your breath and then the remainder carries more impetus.  It's also a great opportunity to build a beautiful crescendo, and who the fuck doesn't love that?

Of course, if you get to Zeppelin length, you've gone too far.

I think they should limit the crowd improvs to one or two per show.  Doing that in Not For You now I think. Crazy.

Also miss the spontaneity of Daughter now that the same crowd singalong is done every time.  2003 was a great year for Ed just going in whatever direction he wanted.

Loved it the first time I heard it. Now I want the original back. Too big a point in the song to slow down. The whole crowd is ready to explode and it doesn't happen.

    HAte this version.
  • It was a great switch up in Greenville, and I love that the band is constantly working with old songs to make them "new" 20+ years later. That being said, I prefer the original of Corduroy.

YES!!!! corduroy should have never been turned into a "singalong" song

Not a fan of the part chosen for the slow down...I like the idea but the slow down happens at the moment the song normally hits its peak...then it just builds up into the chorus.  Now, if they tried slowing down during the last verse and then built back up into "Everything has chaiiiinnnnnnsss!!! Absolutely nothings changed!....."  then we'd have something.

They'll probably pick a different song to do the crowd participation next tour. It was DTE for LB and Corduroy for 2015-2016. I wonder what song will be next? Hopefully not NFY.  :|

I definitely don't like the new version.  Now if you want to play the new corduroy from bridge 96 i'd be 100% on board.

I like when they change up their songs...especially the older ones.  I like the "new" version, I just don't care for the "yeah yeah" crowd shadow singing.

I just think with such an angry, intense, and energetic song, slowing it down at the apex is such a tease. Besides, with it being one of my favorite songs of all time (one of the first I learned on guitar) messing with something so perfect is tough to swallow. HOWEVER, I see the appeal of the slow down and like it myself, but the original version is just unreal.

It would be sick if they did the slow down every now and then and kept people guessing as to which version they're going to play, that would keep the song and show fresh and would still please "corduroy purists" like myself.

i love it when they make tweaks to the classics.  Keeps things fresh and it's always a nice surprise.  The corduroy at Wrigley in '13 was a great example of this.
