10 years ago this week I had some serious medical crap going on in my life (complications due to Crohns Disease) that left me in a drug induced coma for 2 weeks, the ICU for 4 weeks, and then a full 6 months of recovery in and out of the hospital. The doctors seriously didn't think I would make it. I was 16 years old. It was a very surreal experience and I think the main reason why I didn't die during the coma was because I never thought that it was possible. I was in the hospital and they were going to fix me and everything was going to turn out just fine. I was very naive.
Pearl Jam Self Titled came out the week before I left the hospital for the first time. That record was very healing at the time. (Comatose!) In the years following, I hated the record because it reminded me of this crazy experience. I have since listened to it enough that I have new memories associated with the songs, so I don't freak out while hearing them...
I'm not sure what my point is. I guess it's just nice(?) to reflect back on literally life-changing experiences on their anniversaries and know that you came out a changed but better person.2003: 7/14 NJ ... 2006: 6/1 NJ, 6/3 NJ ... 2007: 8/5 IL ... 2008: 6/24 NY, 6/25 NY, 8/7 EV NJ ... 2009: 10/27 PA, 10/28 PA, 10/30 PA, 10/31 PA

Can't imagine going through that at such a young age. I don't think your view at that time of not having any other option than to recover speaks to your naivety. I think it's proof of a strong spirit and the power of belief and optimism. I've seen the lack of both work exactly the opposite in people's lives. I'm glad that chapter of your life had a happy conclusion. Maybe inside job more correctly describes that time for you now.
