Last time (2009), they started a 5:00 pm and wrapped up for 7.

I take it you're going over Roger?

Drop me a PM, we should meet and have a beer or two! my wife and I decided to make the 6 hour drive from H-town when our MSG plans fell through...
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.

Awesome. That's a lot earlier than I thought. I guess it gives everyone time to go out that night after the festival? I'll send you a PM, Shep.

It takes forever to leave but there's always time to go out in NOLA. Haha.

I actually whet back and took a quick nap and then went out

Jazzfest ends at 7pm partially because there are so many jam sessions throughout the city until dawn basically. Headliners taking the stage with blues legends at clubs and bars. Ive always thought of Jazzfest as the daytime party.

Going to reference 2009 again - when I went with my wife (who is not the most avid concert goer), we watched band of horses around 2 pm, when they were done around 3, we made our way over to the main stage lazily (i.e. had some food, bought some beer, checked the place out, my wife actually bought fairly expensive sunglasses at a sunglasses hut because it was a real dustbowl on that day)... probably started making our way to the front around 430... got more than close enough at that point in time in the day... from what I remember no more than 10-15 rows back.... it was a very easy-to-move-through, laid back crowd....

don't know if that helps you any in your plans... but (1) take something to cover your eyes - it is on a race track, and (2) relax and have a good time... there's no need for you to clutch the rail the whole day....

Clutching the rail all day would be sad when you're missing some of the all-time blues and jazz greats on smaller stages. Some of these guys played in the 1940s blues clubs in Chicago/NOLA/Mississippi etc. cool to see at least once. Theyre dying off every year

Great advice Shep! I'm only going for the day, so I'm hoping to see as many bands as possible.

I think any band with "Swamp Donkeys" as their moniker deserves a go.

i would poke my head into the gospel tent(it's cool/shade) for any gospel choir, if you have the spare time. saw aaron neville play in that tent. jesus might not be your thing but he was right there during his set...whether you put your arms in the air or not!
any band with the word zydeco in it is prolly worth checking out...same as mardi gras indians...if u are looking for new experiences especially and culture
make sure u chow on the food there..especially this(sooo good)

I think that one looks awesome! My hunch would be that between grabbing food, browsing some of the smaller stages/tents, and looking at the vendor art, this list will probably fill up your day.

Is anybody going on weekend passes? I'm planning on checking out at least 2 of the first weekend days of Jazz Fest. I'm not typically a festival fan, but this one looks amazing.
