Top 10 PJ songs for new listener?

Options
Say you're taking someone to an upcoming show that is unfamiliar with the band. What would the top ~10 or so songs that you would let them hear to familiarize themselves with PJ?

I think we'll sit down one night and watch PJ20 before April but was hoping for just a few songs to introduce them to.

thanks.

I have a playlist in my iTunes

    Pearl Jam: An Introduction

    1) Why Go
    2) Leash
    3) Satan's Bed
    4) Smile
    5) In Hiding
    6) Breakerfall
    7) Green Disease
    8) Life Wasted
    9) Force of Nature
    10) Yellow Moon

They are off the map but musically brilliant.
  • I say let them hear all the "Greatest hits"
    Alive
    Jeremy
    Betterman
    Elderly Woman
    Daughter
    etc. etc.
All the songs that are guaranteed to be played.
If, of course, he or she is not already familiar with those.

That way he or she gets to the show, and they are able to join in with all the "sing-a-longs"

What is your goal? How intense do you want the hunger to be?
Oh please let it rain today.
Those that can be trusted can change their mind.
  • Give them a creed cd labeled Best of PJ.
Sit back and enjoy the aftermath.
Then- spin no code followed by vs.
  • Thanks. It's a she and I believe she's at least heard Alive and Jeremy. Maybe Better Man as well. I thought about making a couple different cd's. One with faster songs, one with slower. Still not certain but I'll keep the suggestions in mind. Thanks.

  • I would run the stats for the last tour and fill a cd with starting with songs played the most (likely Alive and Even Flow) and descending down til it's full. That way she'll be familiar with most of the show.
    1996-09.22; 1998-06.14,07.02,07.13,07.14,08.17,08.18; 2000-08.18,08.20,10.11,10.27,10.28; 2003-04.23,04.26,06.18,06.19,06.22; 2004-10.02,10.03,10.05; 2006-05.16,05.17,05.19,05.20,06.23,06.24; 2007-08.05; 2009-08.23,08.24,09.28,10.31; 2010-05.06,05.07; 2011-09.03,09.04; 2013-07.19; 2014-10.01; 2016-04.26,08.20,08.22; 2018-08.18, 08.20; 2022-09.17; 2023-09.05, 09.07; 2024-08.26

    Exactly.
Get her familiar with all the sing-a-longs, and fan favorites.

Their catalog is really diverse, so it's kind of hard to pinpoint what songs will do it for any one person. For me, it was this period of listening to Yellow Ledbetter over and over again than I moved on to Ten, Vs, Vitalogy for awhile, then listened to the newer albums, then I covered everything in between. I'd say the first 3 albums are the most solid of entry points.

    Release
    Alive
    Black
    Jeremy
    Corduroy
    Nothingman
    Betterman
    Animal
    Daughter
    Elderly Woman
  • I did a playlist for my friend who is also going to the Fenway show (her first PJ experience) and here is what I put on it:
    I Got Shit
    Wishlist
    Once
    Oceans
    Nothingman
    Elderly Woman
    Unthought Known
    Breath
    Hail Hail
    Black
    Rearviewmirrior
    Betterman
    Given to Fly
    Thumbing My Way
    Future Days
    Tremor Christ
    Release

    Absolutely.

For me, it was the Two Legs version of Small Town, followed by (I know, I know) Last Kiss. From there, it was Ten. Either Vs or Vitalogy was next, followed by No Code and Binaural. I got into them slowly starting in 1999, but by 2002, I had bought a lot of the 2000 tour boots.
Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"
  • When is the show? You have at least a few months. Get some bootlegs and let her listen. I would not do studio to start as all the songs sound better live. If she picks up a couple, and wants to hear the words, then give the relevant studios.

There's no need to spoon feed. You have time. Just let 'er rip.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

For me, I would create a list of songs that are most likely to be played. I think you enjoy a show more if you know at least some of the songs. With that in mind i'd choose:

    Even Flow
    Alive
    DTE (find a live version)
    MYM
    Courdoroy
    Porch
    Small Town
    RVM
    Yellow Ledbetter
    Black
'F*** the pessimists. F*** 'em.' Eddie Vedder
