How does staff effectively tell their boss that his secretary is a disaster? Several of us feel that he needs to know how and why she's driving all of us up the wall, and why she is completely useless, but that is a really difficult thing to bring up, especially when it will make her look so bad and she wouldn't know we're doing it. Why does this matter? The corporate world should be a meritocracy. People that suck should be fired so that more deserving, better qualified people can step in and do the job better.

There is a right way and a wrong way to let people go, on that I absolutely agree, but people that argue how wrong it is to fire people because they are 'nice', or because of how it's gonna effect their life afterwards are speaking a language I simply do not understand.

I agree, but this isn't the corporate world. I work at a university. Totally different atmosphere and culture compared to the corporate world. Also, we're union (not one where it's impossible to get rid of people, but, rightly, there is a process for dealing with these matters). At any rate, we don't want to destroy the woman or send her into a disciplinary process (yet), because she doesn't know any better (and yes, it was a bad hire - if I'd had a say there is no way I would have hired her; she had already worked with us as a temp a few years ago, and I totally saw her issues, but most people aren't very perceptive, so our boss hired her). Also, we don't want to hurt her personally. Yes, we do care about that because she's a person with feelings. We just want her to stop acting like a useless idiot. She's got weird ideas about shit. I feel like she could improve; she just needs real guidance from our boss. I absolutely do not believe in the cut throat attitude that you're talking about. I do NOT think it's wrong to fire people who deserve it, but I also think that people first deserve a chance to improve, which means diplomatically approaching them about their problems. If they can't change and improve, THEN fire them. In this case, besides the few attempts I've made (I am not her superior), no one has ever confronted her about problems, and that I find inexcusable.

Here is my counter-argument, at least regarding the cut throat aspect.

In my line of work people get hired because they are supposedly subject matter experts. Forget being trained or requiring guidance, these are the people that are supposed to GIVE the training most of the time. Many just fell into this work, or thought it would be a good career at some point, but just to be honest, many are frauds that have no idea what they are doing. They have just learned how to play the game, not rattle any cages, and get a paycheck every 2 weeks.

If you let enough of these kind of people infiltrate the organization the whole place suffers. I am a firm believer of 'You are an adult and you are here to do a job. If you are not doing it, we should get rid of you and find someone that will.'

I end up where you are, but I still think that everyone deserves a chance to improve. Not a bunch of chances. But at least one.

People don't change bruh.

You may want them to. You may want what's best for them. You may sincerely care about their well being and want them to change their behavioral patterns, but at the end of the day people are what people are.

The good thing is that there are a million kinds of office cultures out there. Some where only being nice, or not being that great at your job, or being a little weird are more acceptable. That is where these people should work. It's not a slight, it's just the way it is. Some people are meant to work at Apple, and others at Applebee's.

after a few more messages I've decided that some people are just incredibly shady. I fully admit that I could've gotten the jump on this BS by booking something waaaaaaay earlier when the dates were announced but I was not hell-bent on Wrigley. I rolled the dice on tix, if I hadn't pulled 10c tix I wouldn't have gone. But I guess now that most 10c members are confirmed they've booked up the whole neighborhood! I'm alright though, I've got a room booked at a hostel. I was just hoping I could score something within walking distance.
