We have never been to South Carolina (for any significant amount of time anyway) and would love to hear from locals about things to do, places to stay, places to eat/drink, etc. I am planning on arriving late on the 19th so we will have a day to do things. During previous tours a separate thread has been started by locals, but can't remember if those threads are on the Porch, Given To Fly, or All Encompassing Trip. If one has been started let me know. If not...... hint....hint...

I moved to Sc now 9 years ago....Below is where I would go if I got limited time and wanna have a good time.... I could post a bunch more places to eat, but I like a good meal and places that have never let me down.

    Places to go....
    1) The State House - Not much was left down here after the civil war, but lots of history around the capital.
    2) Riverbanks Zoo
    3) University of South Carolina Horse shoe...

    Places to Eat.....
    Downtown
Motor Supply - Great place to eat lunch or Dinner - Best place in all of Columbia (Pricey)
Diprato's- The best Pimento Cheese you will find anywhere.(A must try) They make amazing salads and sandwiches. They are only open for Lunch.
Blue Marlin Steak House - Only place I wood recommend eating seafood other then oysters.
Pearlz - If you want fresh Oysters Pearlz is where you wanna go.
Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse - Typical ale house

Across the bridge but a must try if time permits in Lexington Sc.
Keg Cowboy - All Craft Beer and some of the best food you will find. Menu is always changing

Congaree National Park is worth a visit if you have time (it's about 30 minutes outside of Columbia if I remember correctly).

edit: glad to hear about the GA line stuff...my friend and I will be enjoying a few beverages beforehand so we definitely won't be at the front of any lines. Hope to make it to the Thirsty Fellows meetup if that's where it'll be.

  • This will be my first show outside of New England. I got GA, but my friends are going to have to hit up TM. 5 of us are renting an RV and are driving down to Charleston to pick up my brother. He turns 40 less than a month later and has no idea that we're coming and that he's going to the show. Can't wait. This is going to be awesome.

In what area should I look for a hotel? Is the arena close to an area with restaurants and bars?

Hampton Inn is booked, and there aren't that many more rooms left at Holton or Hyatt.

I went to the Riverbanks Zoo last year and they had some new things being worked on. Should be open this year. Not a bad afternoon if you want to spend some time there.

Hampton still showing available when I checked. The price is $189/ night. $208 for the Hilton. And $189 for the Hyatt. I was wanting this to be the cheap vacation. I am still hoping that PJ25 happens in the Seattle area. I have never been to the west coast and was planning on that being our "real" vacation. I booked through Airbnb for Lexington - first time using it. I may do the same for this.
