Hampton, V.A. - Cville 13
The location, the small horseshoe design, its a one off non major city. i think its got huge potential to be a "hidden gem" of this tour. the other potential spot for a night like that is greenville sc. but i got a great feeling about hampton.

Greenville has a Saturday night spot which is great. But I agree Hampton, V.A. could be the gem of the tour and bummed that I can't get to it.0

I was thinking the same thing. I was only gonna go to Greenville due to proximity and it being on the weekend, but I think I might have to go ahead and take a couple of days off work and drive on up to Hampton.dtr0624 said:The location, the small horseshoe design, its a one off non major city. i think its got huge potential to be a "hidden gem" of this tour. the other potential spot for a night like that is greenville sc. but i got a great feeling about hampton.

From the perspective of deadheads and phishheads, Hampton Coliseum is a special venue. A little history on the venue.
~ The Grateful Dead and Hampton Coliseum ~
The Grateful Dead played multiple night runs there for several years. During the Touch of Grey era, they outgrew the venue and the the city's tolerance for the traveling circus. But, the band loved the venue. So in October 1989, the dead announced a stealth two-night run one week before the shows. They did not use "The Grateful Dead" as the name. Instead, the used "The Warlocks," the band's original name that didn't last past 1965 (the band's first year). At these shows, the band played "Dark Star" for the first time in many years. Listening to audience tapes, you can hear the crowd cheering for several minutes as the the notes of this classic, well-loved song reemerged. This two-night run in 1989 at Hampton is considered among the best shows in the history of the dead. Worth a listen. Here are links to both shows (video and audio) Night one:

~ Phish and the Hampton Coliseum ~
Phish also has a long history with this venue. After a four hiatus, the band's first shows in 2009 were a three-night run at Hampton Coliseum. They also released a compilation of songs from their two-night run in 1998, Hampton Comes Alive.
Hampton Coliseum
In one sense, it is a "dump." It first opened in 1970. There are no skyboxes, luxury concessions, etc. The floors can get slippery. It's old.
In another sense, it is perfect for a rock-n-roll show. It is relatively small (max capacity ~ 13,000). Often, they will do GA for the entire venue (but apparently not PJ this Spring). It looks like a spaceship from outside. I've never noticed issues with the sound. Based on the history briefly sketched above and more, the Hampton Coliseum has some mojo! I would compare it to the Spectrum (RIP), but smaller.
Hope to see you there!

you'd be wrong.
the hampton venue is old as dirt. doesn't even have an elevator.
c-ville was awesome.
i'm so disappointed.
hampton roads needs a brand new stadium for concerts the size of PJ. there's rumors of them building one, but the locals are throwing a fit.*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*0 -
Pretty sure this is my pick for the tour. Many many years since i was last there. There are parts of my brain in that building.0

Agreed. Loved Charlottesville.0

Richmond VA should have a better arena built.
Easier to get to from DC, Hampton, Cville, ...everywhere. Right on the 95 corridor.

I'm hoping to attend this show. I've never been to this venue. A friend of mine who used to see a lot of Grateful Dead shows may have been at the legendary 1989 Warlocks run. He was born and raised in Asheville NC.You see me empty, Sir, do not pause and inquire, simply assume and refill.

I think Charlottesville was special because it did not seem quite sold out, and the back of the venue had people sitting. I think the band felt like they had to "work for it" so I think they lit it on fire. I wouldn't think it was a VA thing. I'd look at the percentage list and base it on that. Right now my bet is on Raleigh being the surprise.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

Any advice on a hotel for the Hampton Virginia show? I'm driving from Philadelphia with my daughter.0

I won't be at Hampton but was at C-ville. I think Hampton will be top 5 of the shows we know about.www.twitter.com/robert_harbin0

Greenville is also smaller than I realized. Should be sweet. They are all sweet..who are we kidding?www.twitter.com/robert_harbin0

Tidewater Area has much more people than RVA and the band has a history there going back to 1998 I believe. Richmond Coliseum capacity-wise is almost identical to Hampton (10K for Sports). Robins Center (UofR Hoops, 9000) and Siegel Center (VCU Hoops, 7500) would be feasible too. I think the good turnout of prior shows in the area and history of the venue were the reasons. I'm almost expecting a Dead cover this place is revered so highly. And hey, remember Foo played our 1,500 music hall The National...The gauntlet has been laid!!CJMST3K said:Richmond VA should have a better arena built.
