Dankind, you make a rational response to a foolish comment passing judgement on something you enjoyed. (Foolish because as we know one man's garbage is another man's gold.) You sir, are what we all should aim to be.

No talk about how the article is also fucking terrible and offers almost no insight into the guy?

Here you go . . . The article is in fact fucking terrible, as in the *actual writing* is laugh-out-loud, embarrassingly amateur. That alone reveals Penn as a moron in my view . . . never mind that I also find him to be an over-rated actor and annoying as a celebrity in general. I can't think of any movie that I liked with him in it. I enjoyed Into the Wild, but McCandliss ultimately created that story, not Penn. He just made it look pretty.

Tree of Life is a cinematic masterpiece.

.... Are you being sarcastic? It was artsy-fartsy garbage.
Not at all sarcastic. Tree of Life ranks up there with 2001: A Space Odyssey (same FX) and Mulholland Drive as gorgeous cinematic mindbenders.

Also, in my experience, phrases such as "pretentious piece of shit" and "artsy-fartsy garbage" are generally reactionary statements that could often be replaced with "I don't get it" -- that is, if the one uttering the phrase can suppress one's ego for a few seconds and realize that it doesn't speak to one's intelligence but rather one's aesthetic preference and/or taste.

I speak from experience, having uttered similar phrases about Radiohead for years before finally realizing I sounded like an asshole. I just don't get Radiohead. Wish I did. But I just can't get into them.
Lol. No dude. I get it (that is condescending of you to suggest that actually. The movie and it's style isn't hard to get - sorry it bugs me when people say "you just don't get it" when someone says they don't like something). I know art, I enjoy art, I know a lot about it, and i understand it. This has nothing to do with my ego (well not until you suggested I think it's artsy garbage because I don't get it, lol). I just hated this movie. I think it's awful. And the fact that the kid in it is so outrageously unlikeable that I was actually poignantly glad when he died. Sometimes, although rarely, art really is just pretentious crap, like a failed, somewhat insincere attempt at true creativity, and this is that time IMO. I have honestly never said that about any other movie in my life, nor any music for that matter. Tree of Life is a real standout for me when it comes to bad art film.
Radiohead is awesome though, and 2001: A Space Odyssey and Mulholland Drive are both excellent too.

No worries, buddy. To clarify, though, if you had just said that you didn't like it, I wouldn't have said that it's because you don't get it. Instead, you took a dump on a work of art, even if you don't consider it as such (or consider it a failure).

And perhaps "it doesn't click/resonate with you" is better than saying "you don't get it," especially to an academic  , so that's on me.

FWIW: Tree of Life has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85% rating on Metacritic (plus the Oscar nod), so it's not as widely panned as a lot of folks believe it to be. And the only place it really failed (other than in some viewers' opinions) was at the box office.

Yeah think it was good interview. Charlie was great as always. He did push hard. Think Penn knows this wasn't his finest work/desision but didn't pass up opportunity and it did take some cajones to actually go.

Tree of Life?? I didn't get it and hated it. It could be due to not understanding. May try again.

Yeah, the ratings shock me, lol. You are actually the first person I have ever discussed it with who liked it. ;) But FTR, I absolutely do consider it a work of art. Of course it is - all film is. I just think it's a shitty work of art, lol! I don't think I would ever call art a "failure", but I am definitely happy to say whether I think it sucks or not! But that said, always, it's subjective.

Saw it. Didn't like it. Read the book multiple times and did not enjoy the adaptation. To each his own.

Are you familiar with Huey Long and what he did? I loved it (movie) but if you don't like it then I can't argue with that.

Ever since I saw as much of Tree of Life as I could tolerate, I've wished nothing but death for Sean Penn... worst movie ever. I wish Vedder would stop following him around like a little schoolgirl!

Penn has disowned it as well.

That is pretty fucking extreme, don't you think?? You've wished nothing but death for him because you hated one of his movies?? Huh? I guess you must be exaggerating, but perhaps find a better way to express yourself, since wishing death upon someone shouldn't be taken lightly.
I agree that Tree of Life was a pretentious piece of shit though. I mean seriously, what the FUCK were they thinking?? And it was nominated for best picture FFS. I was flabbergasted.
On top of that, Penn has bashed the movie he was in.

I would say Sean Penn is the left equivalent of Clint Eastwood.

Ah cept penn is smart. And mostly on correct side of issues.

Just see a lot of envy and jealousy.
?? Clint Eastwood is brilliant. Yeah, his politics are very old man and right wing, but he's incredibly smart.
I'd rather have him direct a Benghazzi movie than that Bay hack.

Yup. Did a whole study of it in a college lit class. Didn't like the film. Didn't come anywhere near capturing the character, in my view. Sean Penn just annoys me as an actor. Highly subjective opinion, I know.

Penn is trying to stop a Netflix doc that claims he ratted out El Chapo to the DOJ.

Meanwhile El Chapo is rotting away in a sensory deprivation cell.

I would not want to be in Penn's shoes right now.  It's one thing to go hang out with Venezualen dictators and thumb your nose at GW, but one does not fuck with leaders of Mexican drug cartels that are famous for stitching the faces of their enemies onto soccer balls.

Tough spot for Netflix.  Basically sealing his death warrant if they go ahead.

If Netflix knows this, wouldn't the cartels already know this as well?

    I like Sean Penn movies.
I loved the El Chapo series.
Would be awesome if Penn did an El Chapo movie.
Would be brutal if Penn was murdered because of all of this.
Wouldn't be surprised if he was. Sketchy business working with El Chapo.
