Cassette tape is purely nostalgia which the ghost riding song is based upon. I could careless if the sound quality isn't perfect. Life is way to short.

To be fair most people don't get the sound quality of vinyl with the average persons setup.
Cassettes have been growing in popularity for years, Burger Records is awesome, and will continue to grow as long as their prices stay cheap, that is why myself and many others got into vinyl in the first place believe it or not a new record was cheaper then a cd. I know everyone loves to blame hipsters etc but the the type of music fans and bands that brought back vinyl are now the ones that helping bring back cassettes. So all the people who jumped on the vinyl bandwagon in the last 5 years or so because it is cool will probably be buying tapes in three years. The fact that major bands are now releasing things on tape and it just isn't indie bands says how much it has grown in just a few years. I thinkcassettes are great for a few reasons they are cheap but still a way to support there is little song skipping, tape culture is great and they take up little space, would have rather have moved 3,000+ tapes then records the last time I moved.

    Hopefully it does pass.

I agree. We are going backwards in sound quality now?
Nope, just more options for actual "physical" media. I'm embracing it, because before long downloads and cloud storage will be everyone's collection.
Honestly, if the standard becomes higher quality DACs and lossless files as storage becomes bigger and cheaper, I'd be ok with moving in that direction. Surely a band and it's members known for promoting environmental conservation can get behind producing less paper and plastic goods. Don't get me wrong, I love the art and have a good amount of it myself, but we could all do a lot more to truly move towards a sustainable living, no? Just a thought. I can see choosing a vinyl for that nice warm sound over putting a cd on, but who is going to pick a cassette to throw in when most of us have multiple formats of these albums already? I just don't see it being practical.

the other reason for the surge in popularity in cassettes is because of the backup at vinyl plants. Bands can get a cassette out quicker and an LP these days.

I don't like tapes. They have no advantage. At least records are a high quality analog alternative to the digital era. Tapes are a lower quality analag alternative. CD's sound better than tapes. FLAC sounds better than tapes. Walkmans used be so bulky their sheer weight would make them fall to the ground when you tried to use the belt clip (tried this many times while delivering newspapers). Tapes get chew up all the time.

Between older technology (Records) and Modern Technology (Personal Media Players) cassette's done offer a single feature that something else does better.

I've never liked tapes and I never will, I'll never forgive them for getting chewed up.

sorry I loathe tapes. I was pretty excited when the cdr/dvd/dvdr era began. Like many other people I used cassettes because there was no better option. Once there was we all abandoned them in droves.

  • ^ the thing is though, unless you have a high end speaker and receiver setup, your analog turntable is likely not significantly better than anything digital if at all. Some of the most audiophile people I absolutely trust on the matter say FLACs sound better than vinyl on average or worse speakers. If people want to collect cassettes that's fine because it's fun to collect stuff and have it, which is why loads of people have been buying vinyls the last 5 years or so. Everyone raves about the better quality but I'm betting the vast majority of new vinyl collectors from 2010 onward have a setup that's not any better than streaming your library onto speakers from a computer or however digitally, and thus collect vinyl for the purpose of collecting. Nothing different than collecting cassettes, all sentimental value.

It's all about the mastering. A well mastered tape on a Nakamichi dragon tape deck will sound as good as any other medium.

Cassettes were the worst media of all time. But they do bring back a lot of awesome memories.

I still wouldn't buy any new ones.
  • I like the idea for owning PJ on cassette ( I dont have any now but have looked into it a few times) I wouldnt listen to them just think they are cool items to have in the collection

Yeah I just have my tapes for nostalgia reasons. I still have a few hundred maxell XL-II's of pj too. I like the studio album artwork in cassette form, it's pretty cool. I'd rather play a cd any day of the week, but I have them still so why throw them out? Plus the studio albums cost like $6. Not exactly a big deal to me.
I'm like an opening band for your mom.

I play them. Like I said earlier a well mastered tape on a quality deck can sound very good.

My next purchase is going to be a reel-to-reel.

Any argument that cassettes should be released for listening purposes is not logical.

Even if you would indulge the argument that with the right set up or tape deck they will sound just as good as a digital format, they are not going to sound any better, and there are already multiple formats available that are much more practical. Plus tapes will over time lose quality where digital will not.

It would be strictly a money grab for collectors. Another item to sell if it could be determined there is a market for it.

Once again all opinions expressed here are of a guy who is an admitted mental defective with many issues!
