    I'm not quite sure where the term came from, but I came across it a lot in grad school when I was studying early modern theatre. In that context it meant the way society recreates meaning over time through symbolic behavior and gesture. I always knew it as an academic term . . .and then someone invented the Internet and co-opted the word to mean pictures of stupid shit with quotes under them. I'm sure some pointy-headed English professor of the "New Media" had something to do with it.

    Haven't watched the video at 43 yet to agree or disagree yet with whatever you're pointing to. Will get there but would like to watch the whole thing.

    Interesting. I went ahead and looked at 43. I'm not aware of him inventing the word. If he did, he had to have done it at least 15 years ago, because that's when I encountered it a lot in theatre history and criticism books.
