Thank you! Yes, it really is! If I'd known any better back then, I never would have taken a loan in the first place. I would have figured something else out, even if it meant being in school longer or something.

Congrats! I gotta say, I have never understood the college loan thing. I started college part time at 23 while I was working full time cuz that was when I could (barely) afford it. I had tried to go at 19 but the school I got into was like "$25grand a year and no, you can't have financial aide" and I was like "LOLz k,BYE!" and that was the end of that. I've heard these stories of people getting tens of thousands of dollars in debt just to get a BA and I've never understood how that even happens.

Well for me, it was simply because I had already completely supported myself, no help from the parents, lived alone by then (as opposed to roommates to help pay the bills), and paid my own way through school for nearly 5 years straight without loans already. So in my final year and a bit (took 6 years full time, but I did a double major and a pile of extra credits). I was burning out from working 6 days a week while carrying a massive class load at the same time for all that time, including summers at a 3-term university (top that off with a huge amount of partying... I don't even know how I survived, lol), so I took out the big loan for the final stretch to ease my burden and so I could work fewer days a week at my bartending job ..... I wouldn't do it again if I could go back though. When you're tired and that busy and that young and that poor, you don't necessarily understand how big a burden a student loan is going to be in the future.

But how it happens generally, I think, is that a lot of students don't feel like they can have any job at all while they're taking full time classes. So they need the student loans just to live as well as to pay tuition and buy books. I don't know if saying that either you can afford it without loans or you don't go to school is a good solution at all personally. What I do think is that student loans should be given interest free. It wasn't the loan that was hard. It was the interest. I ended up paying back WAY MORE THAN DOUBLE what I actually borrowed. Obviously that's life when it comes to regular loans, but that shouldn't be the case for student loans IMO.
